How do you read emails and texts on an 08' with an iPhone 5?

You do not.

Back in early 2004 the OEM phone interface was wired, there was no Bluetooth yet. All the phone messages were thus easily displayed in the Nav screen as the display data was simply transferred via wires to the TCU and then to the Nav screen via the CAN bus.

No need for Bluetooth profiles just because there was no Bluetooth (until late 2004/early 2005).

BMW was one of the first (if not the first) to have this:
- 2007 comfort access
- Night Vision (FLIR, not light illumination)
- 2012 front bumper side cameras
- 2012 3 series kick-your-foot-open-the-trunk thingy (focus followed)
- 2010/11 7 series variable stop door hinge mechanism
- Lane departure warning
- Heated shift knob (old M5)

Can't think of anything else at this point.

I'd rather have none of that with the only exception being able to use hands free for my phone.

Start having too much of that and before you know it, your car will get hacked.

No offense, OP, but I'm glad that BMW doesn't focus on "technology". That stuff should be saved for the living room.
I could have not said it better my self

A driver (not mentioning the gender here) on two occasions run me off the road while using the phone ... I fear for the future

Forget all this extra tech in the car, i'm getting tired of constantly being jacked in.

I don't even use my blue tooth in car anymore. I want to enjoy the sound of the v8. Nothing is so important anymore.

Sounds like a bash to me. You should consult Siri to be sure though.

M3 first introduced in 2008; that means development first began in 2004. Not surprised that some things are a little behind.

That is why, I think, we have the slightly old-school shift knob on the 6MT rather than the sleeker perforated leather design on the later 335i M-Sports.

What I cannot understand is no A2DP as standard in the 2013 F30s. My friend just picked one up and ended up having to get a Blackberry Bluetooth Adapter (Analog) to listen to music without wires.
