Cupholders?

I enjoy reading Alex Madrigal on The Atlantic's website.

He had this tidbit in today's post:

"Let's return to Petroski, who wasn't talking about social networks, but the incorporation of stuff like cupholders into automobiles. Neither has much to do with the operation of the vehicle, but they've become a selling point for the car companies. Or to make a finer point: cupholders are a defense against a competitors' cupholders. They exist not because we're going to use them all the time or even that we want them, but rather because at some point we may need one. So, a car without one would somehow seem lacking relative to a car with one, even if that other car might be marginally better at the real business of being driven from one place to another."

I think I have a cupholder in my E90. I know I had one in my E60. It was never used.

Has anyone ever used their cupholder?

Ha! I have used mine in my car. Used it in the 550 as well. They are OK at best and only for smaller water bottles or cans of soda...

yeah i use it all the time....only water though. Im not going to run the risk of sticky soda, juice or coffee spilling all over the place when I whip around a corner.

The e9x has good cupholder placement. I actually like that the drivers cupholder is not on the drivers side but is still easy to reach for.

I use mine all the time. Though b/w these and my 335's I have to admit they are the worst cup holders Ive ever used. they need to be deeper.

Are you nuts? They are flimsy, aren't very deep and aren't very big. The WORST part of them however, is that they are mounted up fairly high and magnify any bump into sloshing your drink around and spilling the liquids everywhere. e9x cupholders suck balls IMO, but, that was the last thing on my mind when I bought the car.

I just want to say I love the car but the cupholders suck... not a big deal as I use them once a week... but I have to drive really carefully... One time in my 335i before my e93 m3 which have the same cupholders I was bring home frostys from wendys and someone pulled up and wanted to race so I dropped it into second and sped off but my frostys went all over the passenger seat... defiantly need to upgrade the holders

read what you bolded, Best cupholder placement. I will def. agree with this. the placement of the cupholders are perfect because if anything spills, it goes on the carpet of the passenger side. Its not going to spill on the center console, its not going to spill on the driver, its going into a "safe zone".

Give the cupholders a little credit. They are well placed. they just need to be bigger and deeper. Its perfectly fits coke bottles or red bull cans though, thanks to the little locking mechanism action i can floor it/thrash the car and not worry when i have a coke bottle there, it never spills.

The only time drinks have spilled in my car is thanks to my dumb fuck wife. she got coke all over the FUCKING SPEAKER GRILLS.... still cant really get it all out lol.

I hate the cup ejectors. I don't have my M3 yet (delivery due in August), but when I did the test drive I checked them out and they are exactly the same as my 545 has. How can BMW go 7 years without figuring out a better design? When a drink begins to get empty the cup starts tilting and trying to pop out.

I equate the cupholders in the e9x to a gyroscope. Your drink leans with the turns, and forget about hard acceleration. It's not a matter of if, but when, your gonna spill something. And hopefully not on the carbon leather

Never used them. I don't care if a vehicle I'm buying has cupholders or not.

Ive used them plenty - not the best, but they work. How do you drive with coffee if you don't have cup holders??

I use mine all the time, on long trips I even use both one for the coffee the other to hold some cool stuff like water in my BMW cup

As some of you said, the LOCATION of the driver cup holder is perfect. It's not in the driver's way at all, you can change gears, use idrive, change AC without having to avoid it, yet it's easy to reach for and does NOT take your eyes off the road. However the quality and depth leave a lot to wish for. When I have coffee I make sure I don't go nuts around the corners till the coffee is at least half way down.

I did like the cup holder in my e89 Z4 3.5i better so BMW did design a better one there you can even remove it if you don't like it. I plan to see if I can get one installed like it on my M3

I actually like the cup holders in our cars. They are kinda flimsy but the seem to do just fine for most things that arent too top heavy. I like that they are stealth and can be pushed away. I wouldnt want a giant cup holder on my dash or center console like the Z4s all the time even if it was better.

I use my cupholders but only for drink bottles with lids screwed on. I would never put an open top (or partially open) cup of anything in them. Too afraid of making a mess.

I particularly like that the air conditioner can be directed onto the upper part of the drink in the drivers side cup holder to keep it cool. (You might have to lean the drink over a bit but that doesn't matter. The lid is screwed on.)
