1st oil change??

good info thanks, i change the oil every 3000 miles. i dont use synthetic oil b/c the car wasnt made for it! you think i should try synthetic oil?

Do not change your oil too early on it's first oil. The first oil in the motor is a special breakin blend and needs to stay there for the first 10k to 15k. This special blend is put there so that the piston oil rings seat properly. There are documented cases of people changing the breakin blend too early and the engine suffered with poor compression and extreme oil consumption.

Here's a thought, not stirring the pot on this issue just throwing something out there. BMW engineers recommended interval is 15K miles for oil change/service. Given that they deal with this every day, day in and day out, why would you think that is not acceptable. I've seen the oil come out of my e46 325 at 15K and it's much cleaner than any other vehicle I've ever owned that went on a 3K schedule. BMW pays for the maintenance, they also provide a very nice warranty on the vehicle, do you think they would provide either if their research did not substantiate the inspection and maintenance intervals they recommend? On turbine engines (Rolls-Royce BR700 series) we don't change oil, only add

using a synthetic oil. Again it's something to think about for all you naysayers that say no to 15K changes.

That's so funny that you mention turbine engines, because I used to work on Blawkhawks and it was the same thing..... We never changed the oil on those $150,000 engines. :rocks: Our Hawks saw plenty of grime (copters are greasy pigs) and dust from landing in the desert....

Hey, if it's a Rolls and you open the cowl and there's no oil in it you better start to worry! But what did you expect for $5 million!

I didn't really look yet, but how difficult does it "appear" to change the oil on these? I have 4 years to figure it out I guess, but plan on keeping this for a long time. I think when they tried to sell me the extended warranty, they told me a change costs $800!!!

I change my bike oil every 1K, but I know that's a whole different blood supply. . .

I purchased a new car a couple of years ago (not BMW) and was told around 1200 miles to have the oil changed as it would have metal shavings in it as the engine is breaking in...even thought it was using a syn. oil... after that it would be ok to do the required oil changes at the stated times. Any comments on this ?

Another couple of questions about this oil change stuff. When the mechanics change the oil, do they have to reset the oil life section of the computer? I've always read that most auto manufactures don't recommmend synthetic oil until after the engines are broken in as synthetic oil is too slippery and doesn't allow the piston rings to seat properly. How does BMW get around this issue, fit looser fitting rings?

Was that an Audi by any chance? They don't use sythetic for the first fill on Audis (at least until this year). I think their first change is at 1200 for whatever reason. Not sure why they do it that way, but I think with synth you are safer to leave it in longer, even if all else is equal.

Are your sure our cars have a break in oil from the factory, and not just regular synthetic oil. Even though our first recommended oil change isin't until about 15000 miles, I was gonna change my own oil after about 5000 miles when the engine is good and broken in just to get rid of any metal particles.

My 04 S4 recommended schedule was 5k first change then every 10k.

All, when I first bought my '06 325i, I was told to not worry till the indicator comes on, well, they told me it could take up to 20,000 depending on the drivng conditions. Well as you all know, we are all a little skeptic about that idea and after a year in service and 10,000 miles later I asked the dealer and they first said no for an oil change till I was adamant and then they said "oh, how long has the car been in service?" If it is 1 year on the road then they will do a courtesy oil change at no charge ( no mention anywhere that they do that) YOU HAVE TO ASK!!!!

So it is up to you, since I don't put that many miles it worked out great for me, but I agree with all those posts that the E90 engine runs cleaner and does not require the break-in oil interval nor the 5K or the 7,500K, do one at 10,000 or whenever the indicator says so and you are fine.
