Can Anyone Help Explain Why My Friend's M5 Feels So Much Lighter Than My Z4M?

Whenever I drive his E60 M5, it always feels like it doesn't weigh anything at all, compared to my Z4M. The response is immediate and the car feels more forgiving.

Is it because his car has more torque? I'm kind of a newb when it comes to torque and horsepower, sorry.

That's interesting, when I took my old M5 out on canyon runs, it felt fat as a pig. My old Z4M felt more skittish at the limit due to the short wheelbase, but we're talking about a difference of about 800 lbs between the Z4M and the M5. The Z4M should feel a lot more tossable.

Okay.

I know there's about a 200hp difference between the two, but at the same time, the acceleration on his car feels more instant, so to speak.

You're probably feeling the 170 hp/121 lbs-ft difference, but then again, where are you noticing the power? Across the whole rev range or above 5k rpms? You really have to rev the M5 (above 5k) to feel the power.

Have you had your valve shims done recently? Amazing how much difference that makes on the S54. My old M Coupe was extremely dependent on tire pressure too.

The difference in power and maybe the amount of vibration dampening between both cars.

For all you know he put in a shorter differential. It's not that he's gonna need the longer one on the streets in the US.
