Actually they do look radically different. Bottom line is, if you have loved this body style for years, buy it and don't think twice. On the other hand if you are considering it just because you believe it to be monetarily "to good to pass up", than I would leave it for someone else. People get to wrapped up in the whole "it cost more therefore it's better" bit. It may be better on paper, but does it bring you more pleasure, this should be the deciding factor.

I am not a big fan of the 996 look, either. I doubt I would take a 996 TT over an M3. A GT3? Probably. However a 993 TT or TT-S? Bye bye BMW, that is one of the best looking cars Porsche has ever made.

A good side of the 996TT is that in the rain (and we have had a lot of that in Houston lately) the thing is always planted. It was pooring the other night and most drivers were on the freeway going 40mph, but I had the Turbo pegged on 85 and didn't feel any instance of slip. The 996TT is great for 4wheel drift in the wet as well, very controllable in this regard. If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me. I actually drove the 996TT today as I'm trying to realize it's good qualities other than phenominal straight line pace. |

All I'm saying is that it may be older, but for me it is about the driving experience, not having a flashy new looking car. I would definitely consider a 996 GT3 over an M3, and I did. However, I wanted a car as a DD that had a warranty. In terms of driving fun there are some older 911s that deliver more bang than a modern M3. Just my opinion--JC

Earlier than 996 Porsches were a bit of a handful, not that the latest ones are that great either but the 993 especially the powerful Turbo needs some respect.
Apart from that they are a great car. |

The vast majority of cars styled in the 90's are ugly to me, this one included. They all look cheap - no body lines. Everything looks it's made from dough.
So yes, I'd rather have an M3.

i would have to agree with this statement stock for stock, especially if the OP intends to use it as a daily driver and lightly modify it (or not modify it at all).
...of course if moderate or heavy modifications are part of the OP's plan, the 996TT is the lightest platform out of the 3 to begin with, and can be made a great deal lighter. handling can be improved and understeer dramatically reduced by converting to RWD (and by converting to RWD, i mean removing all the FWD drive components for weight reduction, not just disconnecting a drive shaft like so many 996TT owners do). and finally, its a F/I powerplant that responds to modifications ridiculously well, and its been around the longest of the 3, which means R&D and aftermarket parts availability/reliability is far ahead of that of the e92 M3 or the 997TT. its a tough choice that heavily depends on what you ultimately intend to use the car for. i myself would lean toward the 996TT b/c i can't own a car and not modify it heavily, and b/c its got the most tried & true parts/kits/tunes/etc available out of the above 3 cars. plus i'm in love with that 911 profile and those 911 lines and curves. i have to disagree that it looks dated, b/c it still looks sleeker and more modern than alot of brand new sports cars. but what do i know about that - i drive a '94

After doing a bit of research, I think I'm going to go with the Porsche and modify it what in your eyes is VERY lightly. (You bring up a great point about converting to RWD that I've never even thought about. While I'm nowhere near that point, I wonder what impact that would have on the car's other systems like ABS and traction control.) For less than $2G for an ECU reflash the engine will put out 525HP and 557 ft.lb. of torque, since the car has the X50 power package from the factory. As 94JZA80 pointed out, there has been a ton of R&D done on this software, so I'm not as worried about the engine going boom, like all of those S4s that were getting chipped in the late '90s, after they first came out. I'm still going to keep my BMW as a daily driver, and might pick up a used E92 M3 in a year or two to replace it. I'll just use the Porsche when I'm looking to get a little silly, and drive out of the city. Thanks for your help guys. The guys on the Porsche message boards are EXTREMELY knowledgable, but those sites get far less traffic, and aren't as pollished as this one. I'm sure I'll be stopping in here from time to time to see what's going on.
