So 6sp or DCT?

First post, selling my 08 535i on Monday, want to get a new M3 as it's the last of the NA V8s.

Soooo, I have a short commute to work, 2.5 miles each way. Any downside to the 6sp trans? I don't mind spending the $$ on DCT but I am just trying to decide which will be the better long term trans. I have not been in a stick for 16 years. Driving with coffee in hand in the morning will need to change ; )

Not that I had any problems with my 6MT, I'd take the DCT cuz it's faster and more comfortable. If you want to get more involved and you dont live in a crowded area with lots of stop and go traffic, no doubt that the manual is the one for you.

Can of worms - almost not worth asking on this forum. You will get hard core supporters on both sides and be just as confused as when you started.

If you want an "automatic" - then the DCT (while actually a manual) is closer to an auto from a user interface point of view - so you could keep your coffee in hand.
I have driven both on road and on track and the 6sp is a fantastic gearbox, pairs up with the NA V8 very well, low tech and precise. The DCT is all high tech and very impressive. So both good in their own way.

Some will say the DCT all the way, others will say that it isn't as "engaging" to drive as the 6sp. It will go back and forward for about 6 pages I suspect....

I have DCT and love it; very quick, ridiculously fast shifts, inability to miss shifts, perfect rev match on downshifts, did i say very very quick, and still controlled by the user. That being said, I also wish I had a manual; throttle blipping, more user interface, jerking driving, I miss it.

This really is an easy question to answer for yourself. Since they are both great transmissions you simply pick the one that you'll enjoy the most and that makes sense for your typical driving environment.

6MT Pros:
  • More involved driving experience
  • Less out-of-warranty worry
  • Lower sticker price

6MT Cons:
  • More driver involvement required

DCT Pros:
  • Faster
  • Driver chooses his level of involvement up to a level somewhere b/w a slush-box and a manual
  • Impress your friends with rapid fire shifts and explosive, smooth acceleration
DCT Cons:
  • See 6MT Pros. Substitute Less, More and Higher for More, Less and Lower.

OK we didn't have a 6MT vs DCT for 1-2 days. So let's start LOL

6MT FTW! You will need a little time to get used to it after 16 years, but believe me, you will LOVE it!!!

Can I get "'Future M3 Speculation' for $1000, Alex"?

Alex T.: This topic has baffled M3 historians for ages.

Contestant: Will the F32 M3 have a twin turbo?

Alex T.: Oh I'm sorry that's not correct. We were looking for "Will there be a 2012 M3?".

Nothing against you OP, but this is just a brewing ground for a shit-ton of trouble This quoted answer is good, let's lock this thread before it gets out of control.

Oh, and try searching first next time. You'll understand why we're all begging for this thread to be locked.

+1

I say take both for a good test drive (in traffic) then decide. I have the 6sp since I do a lot of highway driving and when in traffic I don't mind it, love the sound

It is all a matter of taste so do take the test drive (extended) if you can

for what it's worth...I was in a very similar situation...

had an 08 535i and have a 4 mile round trip commute...

I decided on DCT, best of both worlds IMO...my 535i was automatic, so I've grown accustomed to not having that third pedal

Like anything else, it comes down to your personal preference, test drive both for yourself tho, that's the best advice I can give you...
