Separate Mufflers v. Connected Mufflers?

Does anyone know why some axle-back mufflers systems are separate and some are connected? I'm sure there's an engineering reason behind the two designs.

Is it power? Exhaust volume? Exhaust tone/pitch?

The two axle-backs off the top of my head that are connected are Arqray and Eisenmann:

... and the BMW MPE is connected as well.

Interesting that the left and right sides are already connected back at the X-pipe.

That far down the line seems like it's got to be sound/volume related. Good question.

Smaller chambers, so I'm assuming separate canister exhausts would generally be louder and maybe lighter as well.

You mean the separate canisters have smaller chambers right? That would make sense because the exhaust gas can use both canisters when connected, but how would that explain the Akrapovic slip-on? It's pretty tame to the point it's TUV certified. Then there's the Eisenmann race which is connected, but loud.

As someone stated in a previous post, that far down the line would have to be sound related. I would guess pitch/tone, but what do I know? Lol.

I'm hoping other more knowledgeable members can chime in as others have already.

V1 Arqrays had the crossover pipe, which was eliminated in v2.

It depends on what is actually going on inside the connection between the two but it is usually for tone/pitch and in some cases drone cancellation.

Maybe the Akro's have more baffling inside the smaller canisters. I'm not too keen on sound resonance, but I'm assuming since it's titanium, the separate cans were for weight reduction - even if they may have more baffling inside them.

Found the answer on Arqray's website:

Bypass Pipe
It includes bypass pipe connecting right and left silencers for both E90 M3 and E92 M3. It adjusts the sound by synchronizing both silencers.

http://www.arqray.jp/englishweb/prod...cer/index.html

The video I found of the Arqray exhaust and listening to my own Eisenmann Race would confirm this. They both sound "smoothed" out if that makes any sense. Not rumbly like a traditional V8. I guess because both canisters are working as one as stated above?
