Go for it, I turned in my '08 335i in July, leased a Cayman S, which I love. The only other car I seriously looked at was the M3. Went with the Cayman for a change of pace and I was hooked after a test drive. I still couldn't get the sound and feel of the M3 engine I had test driven.
My wife was looking for a new car recently and after test driving many different cars, we found a used M3 on an independent lot. After a few minutes, she knew that was the one.
Found a new 2011 sedan in Houston and picked it up last weekend. Was able to get a great deal with the factory incentive, loyalty discount and CCA discount.
Wow, what a completely different experience than the 335, and it's not even broken in yet.
Steering, handling, engine response, quality of materials, it's seems so far removed from my 335 that's it's hard to believe it's the same basic car design.

I really like the 1m, great car, congrats!
the 1M is a blast Putting a smile on my face every time I drive it.

I am not saying it is a better car then the M3, and for the same money I would have taken the M3 at that time. But where I live, the difference in price is 35-40k USD. That taken into account the 1M was an easy choice and I didn't regret it. The car is even better then I expected. It feels lighter and more nimble then the M3, however is more of a handful to drive. Which gives it a character though Reminds me a bit of my Z4M.
Build quality is not on par with the M3, the difference in price has to go somewhere.

On the track the car performed great, especially for a car out of the box. It draws a lot of a attention, which is quite funny for such a relative cheap car.

OP, you should get the 1M. I have a hunch that it might work out for you.

Probably the best option given the circumstances.

I will for sure not want to keep it after the warranty is up, meaning in one year. The deal is one of a kind., delivery in May/June which is perfect, would prefer even a bit later.
Hey I'm curious, even with the KW suspension on the 335, was the handling on the M3 better?

I will remember that everytime I want to complain about our $100K M3s here in Canada... It must be worse for you.

1M sounds like a terrific choice for you, and I am glad you're having a trouble-free experience so far!

not comparable, the M3 outhandled my modded 335 with ease. That was also when I realized how big the difference is between a 335 and a M3. An 335 will never be a M3 (in the handling department), and a 135i will never be a 1M.
I stick with M models

I can't say that I'm surprised. Frankly, I was a bit shocked at how much better the M3 was than the 335xi I traded in for it earlier this year. I feel like I got 100% more car for about 25% more money. I actually did consider the 1M a bit myself, but the turbos worried me, and I decided to stick to the old reliable V8. Still, here's hoping you got a good one (engine that is).
