BMW Perf, Akra or Gintani?

All,

Looking for a new exhaust for my e90 M3. I've searched and read what seems like a million different posts, but have a specific question.

My preference is to find one that's louder than stock in the cabin, espec. below 5k rpms, but not incredibly loud outside. I've narrowed it to the BMW Performance, Akra or Gintani slip-ons. I'm coming from an RS6 and a C63, which had unique, great sounds. Would appreciate opinions on which exhaust would be best for my particular "needs".

Thanks,
T

most will chime in with what they have and usually with limited personal experience hearing all you have listed. That being said, hopefully a few members local to you have these exhausts and can let you hear them in person.

one last thing, are you looking to just change the rear section or going to do an xpipe as well

look into the Innotech sport axleback... it is valvetronic, so you can control how loud you want it.

Our Race system is the loudest, but I believe our sport system is exactly what you are looking for. It is louder than stock, not loud on idle, but when your on it, you'll hear it.

Thanks. What I'm looking for - somewhat louder than stock from idle up to 5k, then BMW Perf-type sound after that - may be a little unusual. Planning to do rear only, no x-pipe. Would the Gintani Sport or BMW Perf be loud enough at idle?

+1. We had a customer a few months ago that came in with the exact same specs you are looking for. Wanted the full Akra Evo set up but after hearing it decided that he didn't want to wake the neighborhood every day. Went with the slip on version and has been super happy ever since.

Go with the Gintani Sport.
BMW Performance is too expensive for what you get and really isnt worth it.
Akrapovic sounds too tame.

how would you compare the sport setup (full exhaust) to a Dinan with full pipes?

I have M Performance. Yes, it's a bit louder inside now, especially with rear seats down and windows open but it's not THAT much louder than stock. In terms of proportion, it's significantly louder outside, especially at higher RPMs. Idle isn't as quiet as I thought, either. Last week my neighbor joked about how he heard me very clearly every time I start up to drive out. The M Performance exhaust is quite a bit louder outside without making it much louder inside.

In sum, if you want louder inside but not much louder outside, I'm not sure the M Performance exhaust is the answer.

Honestly, exhaust sound questions are virtually IMPOSSIBLE to answer. What is loud to some is quiet to others. What is quiet to some is just unbearably loud to others. Vids and sound clips don't help either because they are dependent on the audio source, and they can't replicate in-cabin acoustics especially with the car under load.

That said, the AMG 63's have the one of the best overall sounds of any motor/exhaust I have ever heard, but it is also a much larger displacement motor. Doubt you will ever get that out of an M3.

Good hunting !!

Thanks. I agree with everything you said. Problem is the lack of opportunity to gather the three exhausts and listen.

The C63 gave me a buzz every time I started it. The M3 gives me a buzz every time I drive it. I'm trying to add the former to the latter.

The other factor is that I think Audi, Porsche and maybe MB port some exhaust noise into the cabin for effect. Not sure whether BMW does the same.
