My car rarely gets noticed, but I always give a thumbs up to another M car. Or even a clean non-BMW. I just appreciate the car, I guess. I've only got thumbs upped once by a guy in another E36, but strangely, plenty of people in trucks ask me to do a burnout at a stoplight. It's happened four times since I got the car some dude in a truck (ITS NEVER A CAR, ONLY A TRUCK) rolls down his window and shouts "yo do a burnout! Sick car bro!" or "hey is that the inline-six?!? Man, spin those tires!"

You know where I see the most disrespect among M3 owners or soon-to-be owners? On y'all's forum. Seriously. |

last month, in one of those warmer than usual January winters, I took my M out and I saw an e46 M3 infront of me. He had to take an exit so he moved over so I passed. It was pretty obvious that we noticed other and I gave him thumbs up and he returned about the same time.
I'm sure there are those out there, but I haven't really encountered any...yet... |

Honestly, when people pass you guys on the road/highway dont take it as an insult, driving around in a soccer mom SUV I consider it a blessing to drive ahead of or get passed by a performance car(m3/m5/gtr etc)

Couldn't have been me. I say hi to everyone in other M3s. Only the Asians chicks in M3's ignore me. They think I'm hitting on them or something.

Don't know, don't care much. I don't really pay attention to other drivers. If it's another M3 driver I'll give them a glance to see the ride and see if they are looking. If not, I just continue on. But then again, I've only seen a couple of other M3's in this area, and it's been from around a corner or passing in the opposite direction.
Down in this area it's usually Mustang drivers that pull up next to me expecting to race. I usually ignore them completely now, even if they have a nice setup or are driving a Shelby or Boss. I'm not going to race you on the street, dumbass. Give these assholes even a glance and they think you wanna race... If I get a friendly thumbs up or wave, I'll give it back. But so far in my experience, most people around here in Civics, Scion TC's, and Mustangs think a glance in their direction is a challenge. No thanks...

In the DC/Balto area I am in I don't come across that many e9x m3s unless at an event. I think over one and a half years of ownership I've seen (maybe I should say noticed) maybe 6 m3s on the road, and when they have noticed me I've gotten the thumbs up (about half the time I think). Also got a thumbs up from an e39 m5 and most humorously from a Prius driver at a stoplight in downtown Baltimore. I am always happy to return the gesture. Twice I have had guys come up to me complimenting me on the car at gas stations.
Have never gotten hate, a modded e46 I think 330 tried to race me the other day and I had a Mercedes SL 65 AMG throw down the gauntlet once. I have spent enough time in traffic court to just pull into the slow lane and drive the speed limit in response to that craziness. Especially when it is an SL 65 AMG, no point in embarrassing myself. I would guess it is regional...

I've had nothing but positive feedback....had a 335i owner slow down at an intersection once he noticed the M and gave me a thumbs up and I did the same (even though the 335i does nothing for me, just trying to be nice LOL) I saw a E93 at another intersection with the top down and we both honked at each other...finally I was driving through the city when I caught up to a black E92 (the owner was really cool, we both rolled down our windows and talked about each others cars for a few blocks in stop and go traffic before he turned off.
