I never thought of myself as a BMW elitist, this thread is a discussion of exterior appearance. I have felt I am not the best judge of this as I like a lot of cars history has proven are terrible looking (I think the Gremlin is pretty good looking, Pacer=not so much). I find the E92, the car I have, pretty good looking. It could have used a higher trunk lip, some fender flaring, lower front spoiler and some hood crinkle or strakes. The 1 is ugly as sin, the new 7 looks worse than the old, the 5 wagon is gorgeous, the X6 looks pretty good, the new X5 is less attractive than the old and the Z3 was one of the best looking cars of all time (except in purple).

The best-looking BMW ever, in my mind, was the ///M Coupe of clown shoe fame.... Not the non-M version. That think stunk of testosterone-driven proportions. And, like many other BMW's, kicked the shit out of cars with much more power.

Sometimes, the car that makes you tingle isn't necessarily one that you would call "pretty" but that doesn't mean it isn't a good looking car.

it is a bit strange i do have to say, i think the old X3 was worse but the 1 is ehh different, i think there is a place for it in the hearts of the few that want and love the 1, but you really cant compare the 3 serries to the 1.
I mean the 3 will be arround for as long as BMW will be, the revenue generated by the 3 pays most of BMW's bills for motorsport and everything else so they have to get it right.

i think the 1 is an experiment but hasnt really fit its nitch yet. all i know that in Orange county i maybe see 1 or 2 a month. so that might go along with yahoo's beliefs, because here, you are what you drive.

I loved the clown shoe, every car magazine ragged on it, but it was so different from anything else on the road and freakin great looking. I especially liked the blue and the option to get 2 toned seats.

The world is quite a bit larger than just Orange county. The 1's have been on sale outside of the US longer and in '07 they were the 3rd best selling series behind the 3 & 5-series. In '08 they surpassed the 5-series to be the 2nd best selling series for BMW worldwide.

Entry level 1 series sell least than 3 series and 5 series..

That must tell you something right there just judging on the sale numbers..

To be honest. Even here in the Bay Area, it is rare. I drive 60 miles a day and I only see a 1 series less than a hand full of time a month. I just know the 1 series are rotting in the dealership.

I see quite a few here in LA, especially convertibles, I think with the 3 vert approaching 60k the 1 vert is a very enticing car for those that ant a vert, and it really doesn't look bad for a ragtop imho. of course I see two 1ers weekly as they both live at my house, but that aside I do see 5-10 a week, which I will admit does pale in comparison to the scores of 3s I see everyday.

I don't know, we like conformity with a show of modest affluence in our (Mine, at least) pringle eyed world and the only place the One Series will conform is Holland, where Cannabis is legal..

I think Yahoo put the 1 on their list because its a pretty expensive car, which makes the Kia Amanti and the PT Cruisers more excusable.

I'd say most BMW's are actually kinda fugly compared to their recent competitors. Has anyone seen the new A4? Seeing those LED headlights in action slightly aroused me...

I love my 3 to death, but I still fantasize about the hot neighbour from time to time.

but back to topic, i have to agree with yahoo. i think the 1 series is pretty ugly and looks like a kids toy car.

seriously, that kia is like smashing a lincoln towncar, merc e-class and s-type jag together, and it's designer goes:" okay, i will have the merc's headlight, jag's grill and the lincoln's c-pillar plus its roof profile...and oh, i will add two strip of audi-style LED's up front for turn signals! Wait wait, the Impreza WRX hatch made the list? Clearly I have different taste than the article's editor. I snapped these pics of a WRX in the parking lot at my office. (Pardon the crappy phone-quality pics):

Call me crazy, but I think that looks pretty great.

Anyway, here's the thing: I don't think the 1 series is BMW's best exterior design. But that's also what makes it sort of endearing to me (in an ugly duckling, runt of the litter sort of way). It's the snout-nosed, flappy-eared, pocket-M car that just won't quit. It's not an "official M car" you say? Well, the 1 just doesn't care.

On the freeways of LA, everyone is driving their identical, Barbie doll 3 series. I'll gladly take a sassy little 1 series over that. People can point and laugh, but they'll be doing it from my rear view mirror. hehe

Jeremy out.
