Just food for thought .... if you give your Kid a super nice car to start with he will expect only better as he gets older. If you start them off with something decent but not high end it gives them something to dream about and work for. Motivation is the key to success in life. If you are given something at a young age you will expect it and not be motivated to provided it for your self. Growing up in Irvine, Ca I saw this time and time again.

This is true, but a 1er or 3er (especially used) isn't exactly high end.

Yea but as much as hate to say ... a BMW is totally a status symbol in the U.S.

A lot of us on here are Jaded because we are well off and live in communities where driving a 3 series is "normal" ... when in fact a large percentage of the population will never be able to afford one with their life styles.

Im almost 29 .. have worked in the Medical Equipment industry for over 10 years and Im still looked at as "spoiled kid" because of driving a BMW ... when the fact is I worked hard to get where im at and to be able to afford a 40K+ car.

How much money does your son make? Don't buy him anything he can't make payments on.

My dad gave me his old firebird that was falling apart. It was free, so I didn't mind the cracked manifold too much, but the stalling got old pretty quick.

If your son can't pay for it, he's not going to be as responsible with it, you need to feel like you earn things...otherwise, it's balls to the wall since daddy's paying the bill.

Yes, it is. A 1 or a 3 series will roughly be around $25-30k. When the average American spends $15k on their car, 25-30k is already considered high end. A 3 series, especially either a 330 or 335, will already be in the top 10 percentile of cars on the road, if not the top 5.

Erm, last time I checked the 3 series is listed under the "entry level luxury sedan" class. Notice the entry level part. Hell, if we went by your reasoning then a Toyota Camry is a high end car. Nice one chief.

Driving a BMW (or any other car) does not necessarily mean one can afford it...

To the average American, yes a new Toyota Camry is a high end car. Go to most places in America, and they would be extremely gracious to be able to afford a new Camry.

I would imagine where you live (and where I live as well), the median income is higher than in most places in America, so we are used to seeing nice cars. Perhaps the 3-series is a standard car seen on the road. I assure you, however, that these places are a minority in America. In most places, a 3-series and yes, even a Toyota Camry, is a high end car that is out of the reach of most Americans.

Consider us and everyone else on this board extremely fortunate to be able to afford the cars we have, even if we can list hundreds of cars that we think are better than ours. That is just human greed. "The grass is greener on the other side." Our cars are already, like I said, in the top 10 percentile of cars on the road.

If my grades drop, I lose my car. I'm a sophmore in college right now doing pre-med. And its hard as hell...

but on the plus side, if I can somehow magically pull off a 4.0 this entire year, my dad agreed to get me something stick. That's my motivation. Since I love driving stick cars at Toyota where I'm a porter and driving my friend's cars. All I want now is my own one.

But I agree with one of the other posters that most of the kids driving BMWs/Benzs/Evos etc. tend to be really cocky. But it also depends on their friend circle. People have told me "You don't act like you have money, And I respect that". Actually only people who see me driving the E90 and my close friends know I have a BMW. Best to keep it that way.

A lot of people here say that a young driver will damage the car. I don't really understand this logic.

If you send a new driver to a good instructor, they shouldn't have any problems. I can understand that a new driver would not have the reflexes that a seasoned driver would have, but if someone doesn't have the skill to drive safely, they shouldn't be driving at all. They should take extra time with the instructor until they get the hang of it.

I remember when I learned to drive. After several sessions with my instructor, I was well on my way. I passed all the tests in one try. The only thing which took me a while to master was parking. However, I definitely never bumped into anything while trying.

I have to admit though, I did do one thing wrong: I left the sunroof in my dad's car open overnight when there was an expected rainfall. I'm sure that I'll never do that again.

Also, I think that there's nothing wrong with getting a fun-to-drive car for your son. Too many people underestimate the young. How about an s2000? Those can be had for as low as $16'000CAD, and are lots of fun to drive.

I was thinking more like a stick E46, Z4, S2000, or even another E90 325 since prices are falling on those. They r mid-20's right now and I'm not buying for another 6 months at least.
