My work route requires me to go uphill and down hill...how will I fare?

well so far in my 39 years
I've never seen a car that has issues going downhill, so that's 50% of your worries solved

i was in peekskill(bear mountain, cold spring, cortlandt manor etc) for the last 2 yrs for my work commute
my tires were great WS60, LM60.
the one time when the road wasn't plowed after a bad overnight i ran into some trouble going up hill otherwise i faired pretty well.

Lowered on RD Sport Springs. I guess I could take a longer route that requires less of a hill climb but that would add another 15 minutes to my commute. I'm more concerned of those times where I'll have no choice but to take those uphill/downhill routes in the dead of winter in a blizzard.

Went snowboarding last year with my 19" LM-60... on the way back uphill was a bit unnerving. We had a good layer of unplowed fresh snow, despite following in the tracks of many cars in front of me, the car still squirmed around all the way up the hill. You really have to feather the throttle in such conditions. This hill was quite steep though, I'm not sure how bad your scenario is.

Cool! i go that way every morning. I take the metro north in peekskill. I setup my car with 19" Continental Extreme DSW's all season tires..i know ill do better in the winter compared to the michelen ps2's i had. but how much better? i wonder

i was on bear men 9w to 202, 18, etc- it can be fun i needed new tires each winter hence i tried out ws60 first and then lm60. if you go over 100 lm60 otherwise i think the ws60 were much better in icy conditions.

I agree with the dude who mentioned feathering the throttle. i didn't mention it in my post but it was key. if u get stuck don't take dsc off, at least i don't recommend it.

if you have the money, spend alittle more money... put the m3 in the garage, and buy an old 4x4 whatever...use it for the winter and sell it in the spring.... think of how silly it would be to crash/total/get stuck in your m3 in the snow. Plus less wear and tear on the M and you will enjoy the luxury of the M come spring time and appreciate it alot more.

Driving an M3 in NY State with all seasons?

Get some dedicated winter tires. Like night and day when compared with AS tires

I used LM-60's on stock 19" wheels all last winter including trips to the mountains to ski. While they will certainly keep you on the road through turns and such, I found starting from a stop while on an incline to be very difficult. If the snow has been packed down and is slippery you'll be in trouble getting started. There were multiple times where I either squirmed all over the road or needed a push to get started. I have DCT and tried multiple things including 2nd gear starts.

Everyone seems to praise their M3's with Blizzaks in the snow but I find the grip to be moderate at best.

I agree. The Blizzaks are OK. I had much better traction with my old Hankook Ice Bear's believe it or not.

I never ran into issues with the Icebears....with the blizzaks I seem to have to be much more deliberate with the throttle and it was the only time i almost didnt make it up a hill. Never had that problem with the Hankooks.

That is interesting... I had Icebears on a previous car and thought they were the worst tire I ever had in winter... even worse than the PA3 which I didn't care for in snow/slush and ice.
