exhaust/engine note
I very recently bought a 2011 m3 sedan and got the car as a demo with approx 1000 kms on the engine. After going thru 2000 kms I noticed a distinct difference in engine/exhaust note with the car not sounding as throaty or v8ish. Little bit dissapointed. Thoughts as to why?

The exhaust should get a little louder if anything. Maybe you've built up a tolerance and now you need to take it to the next level. You've probably adjusted to the sounds and therefore they don't seem as prominent as before...just guessing. Most of us after some time with the stock exhaust need more...then more and then even more...it's a drug. Be careful, I don't think there are any support groups, just enabler's here.

Yes, just did and if anything the engine/exhaust note appears even slightly more subdued. 30-40% of the reason I bought the car was that spectacular sound I experienced from 1000-2000 km's.

My stock exhaust got louder over time. Around 3000 miles it was deeper for sure. I remember this distinctly

I honestly think it is a matter of just getting used to the sound. I remember when I first drove my completely stock m3 I thought it sounded ridiculously loud for a stock car (in a great way). The induction noise was heavenly! I then quickly got used to it and felt I needed more! The exhaust on the car is extremely quiet and you cannot hear it over the induction intake noise so that is one downside.
If you want some more sound it is an easy fix. Start with a high flow bmc or MS filter. Provides a signifigant increased intake growl that really sounds very close to a ferrari-like sound at 7k-8400 rpms. I then quickly got used to that and needed more! I ended up with eisennman race and at first I thought it was so loud I was scared to drive into and out of my neighborhood. Now I am looking for more and more and do not find it loud enough! I realized it never ends and you simply get used to the sound. Kind of like getting high off a drug. First use is so extremely potent but then you build a tolerance. You then need more and more of the drug to get the same feeling you did from the first use. Not my personal experience but a good analogy. |

I thought the same thing until I went on vacation and drove a Jeep Wrangler for 5 days. When I got back the stock exhaust on the M sounded fierce, like the day I took it off the lot. I can't say for sure, but you're probably just getting accustomed to the sound.
