Whoa? Really? No s*#@.

First, UK pricing is out. Extrapolating US MSRP within a reasonable range is common once euro or sterling pricing is available. Based on existing F10 M5 pricing, most folks are expecting a base for US buyers in the $88-$94k range.

Secondly, to reiterate the purpose of my post for those incapable of reading the ultimate question - I'm looking for insight into residuals on the e90 M3 (assuming it was bought new in '08/'09) vs. the value of an e60 M5 from the '06/07 era.

My intention is to employ this info (not as primary but an input into my consideration) for my next purchase under the assumption that the new F30 M3 sedan and F10 M5 will trend in a similar fashion when they come out in the '12/'13 timeframe.
I understand your question just fine. My assertion is that if you don't know what the car price is, an accurate estimate of the residual (a residual being some percentage of msrp or purchase price) would be impossible. I guess it's fine if you want to speculate, but these are going to be pretty inaccurate speculations. Even if that m5 estimate is accurate, what about the m3 price? And what about demand, acceptance by the customer base, and other factors that will determine how well a car holds its value? Simply put, it's way too early to say

I can understand you feeling a bit under attack because of some of the thread responses, but lashing out sarcastically isn't going to make people more willing to help you here or in the future.

Geez, who pissed in your Wheaties?

If you were only interested in the answers to your question at the end of the OP, then just ask your question without all the backstory. No reason to get pissy for people commenting on your unrealistic plan of getting a CPO F10 M5 in late 2012/early 2013 for $75k

The new car will depreciate faster.

And it's all theoretical anyway, trying to look into the future. Just get the car you want and don't worry about future resale value.
Great advice - thanks mystic

I'm surprised no one commented on this, but residuals are based on US MSRP. Since ED invoice is ~10% cheaper than US invoice, an ED car, particularly one purchased close to invoide, would almost always have lower depreciation rates than a US bought car.

Also, not sure if it factors in your decision, but I'm not sure if a true sedan (at least in the E90 sense) has even been confirmed for the next gen M3 in the US. My impression, unless it's changed recently, is that if a 4dr is brought over, it would be in the "Gran Coupe" style (i.e. 4 door coupe), not a more traditional sedan like the E90. Not sure if this is a plus or minus for you, but I think the Gran Coupes are expected to sell for more than the regular 2 door, vs. the 4 dr Sedan M3 which sold for less. I'd still expect you to be able to get one for $75K or less if doing ED.

Another great point on Ed - thanks for the feedback.

There is a lot of chatter about the sedan guise testing on the ring - and some insider affirmation but I dont think we have heard a formal BMW announcement yet

I'm not sure how flexible your timeframe is, but I would not expect to be able to actually park an F30 M3 in your driveway until early 2014.

i think you are probably looking at which will depreciate faster. M5 is the answer.
also because there is bigger market segment the M3 has an audience.

I was just coming to grips with reality - I'm about 12- 18 months overly optimistic on my early '12 timeframe. 2014 makes it even harder to swallow - when will the f30 unveil?

F30 M3 should drop sometime in 2013 (maybe Geneva?), with European sales starting sometime later that year, and US sales starting early 2014.

That's just one man's opinion. I am basing this off timeframe-comments made by insiders, my own observations of when the mules went public, and how BMW tends to roll out M vehicles. I could be wrong, of course. But I'll bet I'm not off by much if I am indeed off.
