I think I like Apple Now

So I had to pick a laptop for school and it had to be bought through the school. We had to drop $1200 no matter what we got. The choices were between some dell, a Sony, and a Macbook Pro. So I got the macbook and it sat in the closet for a year without me ever using it. Recently this year I decided I want to try and go paperless so I started bringing my Mac to class to use it for note taking on PDF and powerpoint lectures. So far so good. I got tired of the tiny ass screen when I'm at home so I just picked up a samsung LED monitor. The thing is sick. Then I needed a keyboard so I picked up the bluetooth keyboard and bluetooth mighty mouse. They're both pretty sick, especially that mouse. I still use my PC because I'm slightly more comfortable with the technical stuff on it and I know I can fix it if I break it, but so far I'm actually impressed with apple. Never thought I'd actually like it.

Whats your favorite part? program? etc?

So far my favorite downloads were the HimmelBar and VLC player.

not sure if I'll ever be a mac person, time will tell (I own a macbook pro and an ipad, so it's not me immediately shutting it down)

Bootcamp it and drop Windows 7 on the other side. Best of both worlds. If you're a student, you should be able to pick up Windows 7 fairly cheaply.

I love my Samsung monitors

I'm not an Apple hater per se, but I do think more cost effective options are available, and though I've spent a lot of time with Apples, I still do prefer the Windows interface, but can understand how the Mac might be easier for some people, depending on their computing needs. The security is of concern, but until network user effects catch up, the incentive to breach is still low compared to Windows.

And FWIW there's a VLC for every popular operating system

I let the computer sit in the closet for a year because I also have a dell laptop which I've been using pretty much the whole time instead. I'm much more comfortable with windows and actually find it easier to use. Some things on the mac are intuitive, others things that are easy to do on a PC are a PITB to do on a Mac.

I have no urge to dual boot the Mac. I've still got the PC on my desk and I use it for most of my non-school computing needs. If I screw it up I feel much better in my abilities to fix it versus my Mac.

As for spending money, I got the mouse and keyboard for free with credit card points. I dont think I'd spend $70 on either, but for free they are sweet. Not to mention I'm actually impressed with the mouse.

I know they have a VLC player for all the operating systems but unfortunately quicktime doesn't support a lot of the movies I've been watching so I had to branch out. On the other hand, these movies are all supported by WMP.

Spaces & Expose to get to them.

Also a big fan of the hiding dock, lit keyboard on the new MBP and the remote control on my Mac Mini is pretty handy when watching movies.

Even though many formats are supported through "stock" Windows programs I prefer to watch everything through VLC anyway

I've had my 15" MacBook Pro for just over two years now and I love it. Still performs and looks like new, and I haven't ever had a single problem with it.

I really like how useful the trackpad is. The two finger tap to right click, two finger scroll, three finger swipe to go in between pages, and the four finger swipe for spaces/expose/switching programs are great.

VLC is pretty awesome. I myself have never used a MAC. Too expensive for my taste or I could be cheap. Far as apple products go I have only had a Ipod Nano. The one that came out in 2006.

I love my Apple Cinema monitors. Have two at work where I sit glued to them for almost 10 hrs. min. every day.

Best investment ever to save my eyesight.

Got everything going that every body mentioned.

Funny enough, on the track pad one finger is right click, 2 fingers is left click. On the mouse with no buttons, click on the left side towards the front for left click, the right side for right click. Plus I can scroll by sliding my finger up and down the mouse, go forward and back, etc. all through the mouse.

Making the computer stay working as a desktop with the laptop closed took a bunch of trial and error. Would have been an easy one click process on the PC.

I've been using my buddies Mac. It is actually pretty neat. The only reason why I can't switch to Mac is because they don't have right clicks on the mouse and they are way over priced. Sure they look nice but I can't justify paying more money because it just looks a bit better.

I will stick with my full Asus setup. Asus netbook, desktop, notebook, 27 inch monitor.

You can actually right click on all of the apple mouses since 2003-4 or so. It has only 1 button, but it will sense if you click the right side and treat it as such.

The newer macbooks/pros trackpads will also sense a right click you just have to turn the option on:

Glad another person drank the cool-aide... I used to be a PC fiend building my own computers, etc. throughout high school/college.

When I reached my mid-twenties I just sort of got over it and decided to switch to Mac because the hardware (while pricey) was just a million times more durable than what is available for PC.

Now that Mac moved over to x86 architecture more software is being developed in parallel to the PC stuff... and for what isn't available there is always bootcamp.

I use an 8-core mac pro for my work/Solidworks workstation. Works beautifully.

@TK I can't wait until november with the new Apple TV comes out... It's going to be money.
