Intake vs. drop-in filter question

Hi everybody,

This is my first posting on M3post, coming from a 335i on e90post. I have my M3 since 24 hours .

What would be the HP / TQ advantage from the Dinan intake compared to a drop-in filter and which drop-in filter should be used ?

Thanks for your feedback.

Eugen

I doubt the difference is much at all.

From what I have seen, and experienced, the plastic connector between the air filter box and the intake manifold is a big source of restriction. I changed mine out with an ENVY Charge Pipe and couldn't be happier. The dyno shows roughly 14 hp or so by just changing out that pipe. When one changes the entire intake system, I think the gain was about 17hp. Thus, the charge pipe is the biggest source of restriction.

I installed an oiled filter (AFE I think, don't recall...they are all about the same) and the Envy Charge Pipe. I am very happy with it! I don't think you need to change out the entire intake system.

I would just swap the factory filter for a AFE or similar, then swap out the charge pipe if you like. I really don't think there is much at all to gain after that. I think buying a complete intake is just a waste of money, unless you like the looks of it enough to pay for it.

A couple pics of the charge pipe are in this thread... http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=331782

Link to Technocrafts page (they offer a "complete system" as well): http://www.tecnocraft.com/Tecnocraft...ystem-P18.aspx

PM eric@pyspeed.com (supporting vendor) for a good price.

Forget the Dinan intake, contact Eric@PYSpeed about the Tecnocraft Envy Charge Pipe, http://www.pyspeed.com/product-p/tcc-8055.htm. I have it along with the Macht Schnell Filter and like it alot. PM Eric, he'll give you a great price.

Any Tecnocraft Envy Charge Pipe alternative to paying $600+ for one tube?
Is there any company that is making a non CF one that still looks clean / OEM?

The price is quite ok when the power will be there. What about the tape ? Is that really needed ? Which filter ? What are realistic hp/tq gains ? Sorry for that .

PM'd Eric. Thanks in advance.

Hello Moderator!

I went with a BMC drop-in air filter, but you can go ahead and make me jealous by getting a full intake system.

The Agency Power Charge Pipe is only $270 CF too.

you can find them on our website. Couple this with a dropin AFE or AA filter and maybe some RPI/AFE scoops and you're golden.

No comment on these "power pipes" but the stock intake system is very good.

It looks like houndstooth from a distance instead of CF, etc.

Why did I read that in a “scary” German voice? No offence my German comrades, but your language is kinda creepy, always sounds like you’re mad.

How does the pipes and the filters work with BMW servicing? When do they do the oil change and air filter for me, I don't know what they'll do when they see it...

Good question! Anyone swap out a filter or intake before their first service know the answer?
