So I mounted my winters...
Now I am thoroughly confused. So I bought a set of the oem winters off of another member on here, he didn't know if they had tpms or not. I found out that they did but here's the thing, the tires on the winter set are DOT dated for 2008 and they also came off of a 2008 m3. So I expected the tpms not to work because it would be a pre 2010 tpms which would be incompatible with my '12. So I fill each tire up to the recommended psi and mounted them.
To my surprise I had no error codes at start up. So I went for a little 10 mile cruise because I believed they were getting readings from my summer wheels nearby. During that whole 10 mile drive I had not a single error code on the dash. Now I'm interested in why I didn't get an error (probably a first for m3post). I didn't hit reset tpms so maybe that's it but that doesn't explain why it doesn't have a lost tire pressure reading. Is it unheard of for US cars to come with the indirect tire pressure monitor? That's the only reason I can think of why this is happening (or not happening). Any other possible reason? |

I don't remember on the BMW how long without a ping from the sensors before it registers an error, but on my old Infiniti, it took about 15-miles before the error light came on. Each of the sensors has something like an IP address, so that the car doesn't try to read other vehicles, or even its own other sensors.
FWIW, the industry recommendation is to not use tires older than 6-years from production date. The rubber just gets harder and harder as they age, and especially in a winter tire, it may not provide the grip a newer one would have. |

I can tell you from switching to my track set (without TPMS) that the error light comes up pretty quickly in my 09. It gives you a very angry warning and then the TPMS light stays on. Definitely happens in less than 10 miles. In fact, I'm not sure I can make it more than 50 feet before the warning comes on...

Is it somehow possible it has LCI TPMS? I ask cuz he told you he didn't know. Maybe he bought them second-hand as well and there is some kind of mash-up. Only way to find out is by pulling off a wheel, take out all the air and with a machine peel the tire back enough to see the sensor. No need to dismount the tire. Lots of winter setups being sold are second-hand because people don't end up using them or barely did.

Sometimes the warning doesn't come on right away. Even if they were the correct type of monitor they need to be reset in the car.
