Your maintenance is key with ANY CAR from GERMANY. While I believe Asian cars and some American are easier on the cost for maintenance and just all around requires less.

For real, there's no arguing about the fact that older Audis where really unreliable cars, I had 3(2 A4 and 1 TT) and had problem with all 3 of them, things that you should never have to replace in a car, but newer audis does'nt seem to have these problems, same for Volkwagen!

I have always thought of BMW as a car you drive because you love driving with reliability and cost of ownership way down the list of importance.
The E46 is such an easy car to work on (for the most part). The Audi's on the other hand, that's a completely different story. Was reading of a guy on another forum that had to take off his entire front end just to change something like the alternator

had an A4 a few years back; as soon as it hit 75K miles, the thing just started falling apart; massive oil leaks, cat converter issues, 02 sensor issues; spent $1K a month for a while fixing it; gave up and got a honda civic. my buddy also has a late model A4 and it's starting to give him a lot of pain in the wallet; audi's are horrible.........

To each his own taste but for me, in the under 200k range, the R8 V10 Plus would be my choice by far, 3 reasons for that:

1- Absolutly need to drive my car 12 months/year, even in the snow!
2- No 991 911TT yet
3- Just LOOOOOOVES Audis!

Curious to know what you would buy!?

Here's a little video of the new R8 V10 Plus which features many aesthetical changes, new 7-speed dual clutch tranny, bump in horse power and sportier interior, to me it's the R8 I've always wnated to see!

Too bad ...
This is sad but true...

BMW has been following Audi, while all this time, Audi, "Never Follow," has been slowly gaining on BMW turf.

The F30 and F10 both have lost the drive to be a "drivers car." BMW needs a car that will up the anti to the automotive world. Not, an "i" car, but a real sports car.

My E92 M3 may be my last BMW if the F30 is any indication of where BMW is headed. But just to be clear, neither will an Audi.

And what about the S6, M5 and E63 comparo:
http://www.caranddriver.com/comparis...omparison-test

As a recent RS4 owner, I almost cancelled my E92 order after reading this...although would've prolly gone with the RS5.

Having played extensively with both manufacturers, I think it can be summed up pretty simply: BMW is built to drive whereas Audi is built to enjoy. So if you're like me and you want to enjoy your drive (hehe..) you can find yourself on the fence. I'll prolly go back to an RS something in a year or so.

Comparison test, schmarison test, SALES DON'T LIE.

Granted, it's a 3 series, but still, it goes to show BMW's strength in the market. Money talks. Editorial reviews meh. BMW is responding to each demo target for each car type.

Changes to 5, 7, etc. may not be what we want regarding "sportier" edge, but it's what the consumer wants. Let's just hope the 3 keeps it sportier edge.

3 Series Sales Up 42% for November 2012 and 3.5% For the Year

From BMW's November 2012 sales report, here are some updated sales stats for the 3 series.

10,776 3 Series were sold in November 2012, representing a 42.4% increase over November 2011.

88,857 3 Series have been sold year-to-date in 2012, an increase of 3.5% over same period last year.

It appears that 3 Series sales are doing just fine, contrary to what some naysayers may claim.

  • Motor Trend, Panamera GTS (not Audi, I realize) vs M5: M5 absolutely panned as disappointing, big, imprecise

Audi's small Turbo engines seem to be better than BMW's and they also seem to be building lighter, more sporting cars. BMW's electric steering has been criticized as artificial and lacking feel. What the heck is BMW doing? Have they lost the sporting "edge"?

I'm glad I have a "legit" sporting BMW with my E90 (although the steering in my E46 330i is better), but I'm a bit worried about the M3 (and M4?) and whether it will be better than its competition.

i think it's just normal that sales are up compared to last year, they are selling a brand new model instead of a 6 years old model! And the 3 series did'nt kept it's sportier edge like this comparo shows:

Good point, but people still need to make the decision to go with a bimmer based on their test driver, peer reviews, buyer satisfaction, etc. Nothing is for sure or normal in a 42% increase year over year in sales. God, wouldn't that be sweet to say so.

38% up in sales for BMW brand, 56% for cars! Daamnnn...and don't tell me "oh it's new models only", it's not like AUDI, MERC, etc. hasn't released a gazillion new models.

Audi is still mounting motors in front of the front axles and their cars are still very heavy. Also their torque vectoring technology is only in a limited number of models. Yes, in general most Audi's do drive like a glorified Passats. Tons of weight at the nose, dead steering, understeer understeer understeer. Exceptions being their new S models, new A6, A8.

Don't get me wrong, we are on our 8th Audi in the direct family but BMW still has the purists right now IMO, especially with their "Diesel Blitz" coming for 2013.

Here's an example, per my experience. We just ordered an Audi Q5 S-line with the 3.0T supercharged motor, flat bottom steering wheel with paddles, 20's, 8speed, summer tires etc. It's cooler then the X3 35i, manlier, more responsive motor, better sound and IMO better all around inside and in any weather. However, if were are talking about raw performance I think the X3 35i Msport has it beat in terms of overall dynamics, feel, balance. This is just in SUV's...

As far as others, i'll give a brief opinion

S8 vs B7 - S8 has it beat all around. AWD grip, torque vectoring RWD LSD style rear diff, massively underrated unlike the BMW, beautiful in and out.
But stop and think, when has any 7 series been better than an S8. Never IMO.

RS5 vs M3 - The M3 is the drivers car.
M5 vs S6 - M5 is still much more of a drivers car. It's even offered with a manual, and is blisteringly fast on a road course despite what you'd expect from cruising around town.
TT-RS vs 1M - This is debatable, down to the figures. You could argue the TT is still a TT, engine is mounted to far up, prone to understeer, less communicative steering. However, the 1M is a little pokey coupe with a too high of a roofline and power that's all but gone at 5800rpm like ever other 335/535/735/135/X5 35/X3 35/X6 35i/135/Z4 35 (LOL, you follow me). What i'm getting at is the fact that the RS inline-5 is so unique probably has the 1M looking pretty generic as well.

If you are disappointed about F.I BMW's diluting what made BMW's so legendary, there is still some faith

M135i - Evo Magazines contender for best performance car of 2012

The video says it all about overall dynamics BMW vs Audi which is relatable to almost all models.

Caught that comparo a few weeks back. I can't believe how good the M135i sounds. Encouraging for the new M3.

not really, the RS3 has a Haldex AWD system that put more power to the front wheels which makes it drive more like a FWD with no traction problems, not really representative of the rest of the line up. Even a basic A4 2.0t has an AWD system that put 60% of the power to the back wheels to favorise a sportier handling!
