I'd say that's exactly the nub. A lot of testers appear to enjoy the leeriness of RWD oversteer - and also the difference in steering feel w/ a good RWD car.

Case in point CAR's summary in GBU re the M3 (5 stars, 'Best in Class'):

i think feel is a valid point to consider.

No offense to you or Audi, but you drive an M3 and come on this forum saying it's a band-aid between the RS models...OMG. Are you just trying to push some buttons?

He said that the M3 is his band-aid between RS models, not that it is a band-aid... or so I understood.

Dont forget he may have need of a Quattro for the winter and the RS being quattro plus good performance is a great car for him or anyone else who drives in snow.

If the RS4 was such a great car, then why wouldn't you just drive that car until the RS5 was available? If the M3 is merely a band-aid, yet still better to drive for those few years than the RS4, then what exactly does that say about the RS4? Is it the infection the bandaid is trying to prevent?

The M3 is still not that bad, it keeps up very well against the R8 V8. They are nearly equally fast, both on straight and around the track. I think M3 ZCP might even be faster than R8 V8 around track.

(I spoke about numbers, so please do not say the "slower" R8 V8 feels better than M3, because I can also say the "slower" M3 feels better than RS5.)

About M3, it everything but a drag monster, just like the 911 GT3 RS, 0-100 km/h in 4.0 sec, but N-Ring in 7:33 min, if not better. Those liking drag better get a 335i, TT-RS, 911 Turbo, GT-R or ZR1.

i have an m3 because i have a disease, the need for a new car every 2 years. why not give the m3 a go and see how it fares, it's good to know where each car fits into your life.
as a boy/young man i dreamed of an m3, the e46 actually. when i had enough money to buy what i wanted, the audi seemed a perfect fit. now in-between cars i figured i would give the M3 a shot since it was BMW's answer to the RS4 high rev V8 whose engine was a masterpiece of engineering.
the bimmer is good, i prefer the engine/transmission in the rs4, but the m3 handling is better. more legroom in the m3 surprisingly and almost the same trunk space. the m3 is a dude magnet(teenager/20 something guys), where the rs appeals to the more mature audience. thumbs down for the m3 here.
probably should have kept the rs, but hey, why not have some fun if you can, it's only a couple years.
i guess i'm only stirring up trouble on an m3 board with these statements but they are the truth and that is always trouble.

^ +1.

I also chose the M3 to see how it compared and for the most part it was an exceptional machine, bar a few bad memories associated with the gearbox. I didn't feel the hype that so many feel the car deserves, it was a great car no doubt but no better in my eyes than the S5 before it or the XF and S4 that came after, maybe it just didn't suit me the same.

Each to their own, some like BMW, others rate Merc and some just prefer Audi. All great brands that are catering for a different type of consumer.

True I respect that but you cant argue with this either folks, not C&D but Motortrend

I honestly think this shows how good our M3s really are

^ Nice video, I forgot about that one. The M3(non comp package) killed the GT-r and Turbo in the lane change.
The M3 did it in 75.1 mph, GT-R 72 Mph, Turbo 69.3 mph.

Come'on now... forget about the R8. You got nothing to say about the RS5, now that we are finally seeing it in action? You must be so pissed at your 'sources' or at the very least, dissapointed with RS5's performance given your high excpectations not so long ago? Tis, tis....
