abnormal Oil consumption

Typically,

One agrees when being said the the ///M cars use a little more oil, than a standard vehicle. Normally I drive the beast every other day.

Now I started with the Oild level in the middle. I then drove to LA with an average speed of 80mph... On my way back i was now down 1/4 of it
so now my baby says i Need to add a quart....

Ge'ez that alot and i was not driving it hard...
I drove a total of 150mi..

I hope the engine blows so they can replace it. This is getting ridiculous..

Best

The readings are very inconsistent and fall off very quickly sometimes

Did you do the proper break in?

And I agree that the sensor seems to suddenly realize the oil's low and suddenly drops during a single long drive.

How many miles on your car? Remember it's a sensor not a dipstick. It's calibrated every 1/4-ltr, so .50 to .74 (not exactly, but you get the point) is going to read 1/2, but you don't know where it was.
What you need to do is read oil level on a flat surface (garage is perfect) while at idle with engine at full operating temperature. The best thing to monitor oil consumption is to top level off until it reads full, record your mileage, and check it under the same conditions (flat, at idle, etc) every once in a while.

Typically,

One would ask if the proper break-in was done..? The answer is yes
I received the car with 60 miles on it. My salesman who is a very good
friend picked it up from Savage and delivered it to Shelly BMW.

Also I did the proper break-in. It been using oii ever since 3k Mi... Oil adding
in-between.

It Just seems to that is using more oil than normal

Best

How much oil was it using before today?

Do you have access to any kind of a code reader? One would think if there really is a problem with losing oil that you'd be seeing misfire codes due to fouled spark plugs. It might be worth it to visually inspect them, either.

Wow, PG - that is a pretty high amount. All of that oil is going somewhere, if it's being combusted it's got to be building up in the cylinders, on the plugs, etc...

I would say, thatīs a good thing. It also depends on what oil you are using.
I gues most of you US guys are using TWS, since you get it for free when going to your SA. I do use Shell Helix Racing 10W60. I do change oil every 10.000km without adding oil and after these 10k kms the car is asking to add 1 litre, which is around 1 qt. There are always aroud 2k kms track included in these intervals, the rest is high speed Autobahn driving! So mine is consuming about 0.1 litre for 1.000kms

Typically,

The car would use a quart every 2300 miles. The current mileage on the vehicle is 24.9k miles..

When i check the current oil level it was at half.

This is the normal amount of oil the vehicle uses, It just seems strange for it
to drop that quickly. I average 23mpgs, and 90% of my driving has been fwy
for long trips..

Sport Mode is a rare thing as well as the MDM... SO i don't drive abusively

PencilGeek: I'll take that into consideration.. Its good to hear someone else
has a box of TWS in there Garage too
.. LOL

Best

This same thing happened to me.....

My car said 1 quart low, so i decided to park it in the garage and drive my truck for a day or two until I could go get some more oil..thinking it was part of break-in. I picked up an extra quart and popped the hood to put the oil in and oil was all over the engine compartment. I had the issue many others have experienced with the factory oil filler cap.

Have you popped the hood to take a look?

My indicator showed full oil level from new until the 1200 mile change. I just added my first and only oil (1 qt) at 8K miles, when the add +1 advisory came up last week. It's now showing "OK" at the top mark.

There does seem to be a fair amount of variability in these engines. I do routinely exercise it past 6-7K, but rarely see redline. Mine is only a daily, street driver.

I bought my car new with .5 on the dash in Germany. I had to put a liter in prior to my 1200 mile service. Somewhere around 700 miles (stayed with in the break-in guidlines). I put another liter in around 8000 miles, which was a lot of high speed driving on the autobahn and a few laps around the Ring. I just recently put in a liter 3000 miles shy of my 30000 mile service. I drive my M pretty much everyday except for most weekends. I have well over a 100 1/4 mile passes and a move from VA to TX since my 15000 mile service. I figured it is normal for the way I drive (pretty aggressive) and since I don't change my oil myself in between oil changes. I'm still stock and only use TWS. Just FYI i guess.

Every 2-3K would get old and annoying really quick for me.

Unless you consume more than 1qt of oil per 600 miles, then BMW will have a deaf ear to complaints and demands for a new motor.
oh hellz nawz
