Random trunk interior question... screw holes?

I apologize in advance if this has been addressed previously. Search turned up nothing.

With trunk open, looking toward the back seat there are three small screw holes going into the rear deck/shelf area. Right above them an opening lined with an insulation-like material.

What, if anything is supposed to be there?

Hope the description is sufficient. Don't have a camera with me.

Thank you.

EDIT: Picture in post #6.

Thanks. Yep, as you know those levers are near the rear of the trunk. The three screw holes I'm describing are at the front of the trunk interior going into the rear deck/shelf area. Three silver metal screw holes, evenly spaced...

'07 335xi parks next to me at work -- doesn't have them.

At the risk of jumping the gun
Was your car bought used?
Because I don't recall ever seeing those holes in mine
They look like they were drilled to attach something
And badly drilled at that, the 2 side ones aren't even centered correctly

Yes, it was purchased used. Based on feedback, beginning to think it was indeed something the previous owner did. For what I have absolutely no idea...

I too noted that the apparently amateur spacing. But if you look above the screw holes at the compartment-thing, the off-center screws look like they could possibly have corresponded somehow to that. The center screw hole looks to be centered with the part of the compartment surround that juts toward the front of the car. (I'm probably reaching here.)

Ok, perhaps it will remain a mystery. I'll let it rest. Thanks everyone for the thoughts.

I would plug those holes with something
Keep in mind the metal doesn't rust when painted
But judging by the picture, the paint has been removed in the holes
Not sure what you can plug them with
Clear silicon?
Nothing major, you just want to seal the hole, and prevent air, moisture from getting in

Not a bad idea. Thanks.

Yes, I suppose so. I shall search for the missing piece for the rest of time. It has become my new life's mission...
