BMC air filter is a gorgeous piece of art!

So I was in contact with Fabspeed about a month or so ago and they told me that the newly redesigned BMC air filter had not been released yet, but they'd call me when it was released. The first BMC's had a slight fittment problem so they had to be redesigned.

Anyhow, I got a call from Joey at Fabspeed this past Thursday and he told me that they recieved two filters from BMC Italy to test fit and since the first one they tested fit like a glove, I was next on the list to get the second one.

Long story short, I got my filter yesterday and it's a beauty. A bit pricey compared to the other filter options but I guess it's like everything else made in Italy.

I'll post installed pics and my review later on today.

Thanks to Fabspeed for their great service and super quick shipping.

Cheers!

The rubber molding on the BMC filter is MUCH better quality than the other filters available for our cars. I'd drop my MS for the BMC any day...glad to hear that you like it.

UPDATE: Install with pics!

UPDATE:

I installed the filter last night and the fit and finish are top quality. Like powertrip said, the rubber moulding and the plastic top piece on the BMC is better quality than others. I had an aFe filter before and I returned it before even installing it because I wasn't completely happy with its build quality. Once you've seen the BMC, you'll understand what I mean.

Like others have said of other filters, the driving impression was that of a more rev happy engine. I don't really think it sounds different, maybe a little, but the car likes to rev a lot faster.

Butt dyno? I can't really feel anything different other than the quicker revs.

Verdors who carry it? Fabspeed, RPi, Redline and APE. There may be others as well.

Overall, it's a great little mod and the quality is top notch. Sorry for the bad Blackberry pics.

Cheers!

it looks like they added a little rubber black insert into the 'hole' on the far end of the filter. My filter did not have that so I had to make my own!

hmmm....Maybe I should get this new updated BMC. I had my mind set on the MS, especially since almost everyone had good things to say about it. I know most of these air filters are the same, but does the BMC gain as much power as the MS?

I read that the MS provides a 6 hp gain.

I like the BMC because a lot of F1, Le Mans, and Superbike racing teams use them so you know that you're getting a product from a company that has track proven results. It doesn't get any better than F1 and Le Mans as your testing grounds.

As far as hp gains go, I have no proof or technical data to prove that but I doubt you will ever feel 6hp on a car that has 414 to begin with. I'm happy just knowing that the car breathes better than it did with the paper OEM filter.

Yeah, Joey was really cool and informative. The filter was also shipped to me with 2 days of placing my order. I will deal with them again.

That is exactly what they did. I'm not sure if they did anything else, but it came with it pre installed and also had an extra one depending on the application (US/Canadian car vs. European Car).

I'm not saying it is better than MS, APE or aFe, the quality of the filter itself is very well put together and ships directly from Bologna, Italy. Even the instruction was filled with detailed photos and written in 4 international languages.

Give Joey at Fabspeed a shout and he'll give you a quote on the filter.

I read that the MS provides a 6 hp gain.
A comparison between the two would be negligible as both are doing their job in allowing maximum airflow and eliminating the charcoal liner found in the stock filter setups.

The Macht Schnell filters are an 8 layer design for maximum filtration using medical grade cotton, and minimal wicking for premium coverage. There's not much data to be found on the BMC from their website, but they've been in the market for a long time and are very popular on the e60 M5 applications.

The S65 stock airbox is very good:

These are images from the stock filter just before changing over to the Macht Schnell unit, there was even a cigarette butt lodged underneath the leaves between the pleats when removed. Obviously, the S65 airbox flows very well. When choosing a filter, you want something that will deliver maximum airflow while still filtering properly. BMC should fit the bill right up there with MS.

MMMorish: Past BMC filters have used a very stiff polyurethane formula which can distort if not centered properly, has this changed with your new filter?

Hmmm, you know Tom I'm not quite sure about that. Being in the industry you'd probably know better than I would.

Why don't you discuss that with your fellow industry pro's and let us know what you guys come up with?

In the meantime, I know that the install is quite a "no brainer" type of thing that anyone with a hex screw driver and a pair of hands can do, and since the stock airbox is designed with 4 little tabs that hold the filter from the inside, it seems that centering it is achieved fairly easily

Okay, it may be just me but the more I drive my car hard the more it sounds a little raspy. Not a metalic type of raspy but more of a V8 rumble type of raspy. Almost as if my engine is gargling mouthwash or something

Has anyone thought of running without the lid? Leaving the element exposed?

Technically... it would still receive air from it's two inlets... but be able to possibly even suck in more?

We carry both BMC and MS and can attest that both have amazing built quality when it comes to the filter and rubber piece.
