I was looking for an unbiased opinion on an e36 M3 since I was lloking to see if it would be a good buy. How expensive was it to maintain, if you dont mind sharing? Also, If I were to find a well maintained example with less than 100K miles how much could one cost in maintenance?

I was toying with the idea of getting an E46 M3 Coupe for a little while. I then reminded myself that I want 6MT, low miles (no higher than 30k), without the technology and this is near impossible to find. I also reminded myself that I am a 22 year old student with no income and wouldn't be able to afford the extra gas, insurance, and maintenance costs associated with the car. So I vetoed that idea.

When i sold mine with 130,000 miles, it needed a suspension rebuild. Shocks and struts and bushings. Pulleys and belts were noisy. I never had any problem with the car. Radio led went out, climate control needed fixing. All minor stuff. The good would be parts are cheap for me and labor is practically free. I say find a clean well mentained unit, and your good to go. Defenetly alot less problem and maintenace issue than a E46.

I spent $14k in maintenance and normal repairs in 2010 before I sold it in January. (Spent about $24k over the previous 4 years) Unfortunately, I didn't have the time or the tools to be a mechanic. The car had 87,000 miles on it, and I always fixed *anything* that would go wrong. It was in perfect condition when I sold her for $10,500.

The guy who bought it was a well-off guy from Atlanta who didn't mind spending the money on maintenance, and wanted a cherry, stock E36 as a track car. He says he loves it (as did I).

Here's him with the E36 M3 at a track near Atlanta:
