DCT under power

I've recently sold my Evo and I'm in the process of shopping for an e92 right now.

After having countless 3 pedal cars, I come to a crossroads here. With all the new technology these days, double clutched auto trannies are getting faster that MT's.

After driving my friends GTR this was proven to me, and have decided to most likely go with the DCT, even if I lose that "connected" feeling of mowing through the gears.

My question is, how does it fair under power. The car will be getting the vt2 - 575 pretty shortly after I buy it. I ask because I was in the same boat when I bought my Evo a few years back, and the SST couldnt handle over 500 so I went with the 3 pedal.

Thanks guys!

Drew is running a vt3 with about 725-750 hp and DCT

Plus there are tons of SC DCT cars with over 600hp with no issues.

The DCT can take a lot. The only instance I heard of the DCT failing so far was one guy who full knowingly abused it with back to back lc and everything just to see how much it could take. And boy could it hold up. Basically what the guys above said.. DCT will be fine and take it like a champ

Drew's clutches were slipping with his VT3. The DCT can handle up to 625/650 kit area, after that expect slippage.

To be honest my DCT has never been the same after the blower. Prior to the blower it was smooth/crisp. Towards the tail end of having the blower (and consequentially now after removing the blower) the transmission became clunky/notchy and very un-stock like (if that makes any sense) - I started hearing increased whining from the tranny at low speeds, and it is just unbelieveably clunky (NOTE, there was never any slippage or adverse effects on performance; just simply a reduction in smoothness/comfort after miles of abuse with the blower).

In conclusion, you should be fine with the DCT and the blower - but just take it easy on the launch controls, etc...it is all dependent on how you drive - there are individuals with blowers that do the occasional pull on the highway and for the rest of the time drive it relatively calmly and will never see an issue with the DCT; then there are others that take the car to the strip with sticky tires and try cutting sub 1.8 60ft's over and over and after time this will obviously take its tolls on the tranny. Its a strong transmission, you should have nothing to worry about.

6MT is Stronger than the DCT if you are looking to mod the car and drive it hard. Regardless of a SC'd DCT car or not,At some point the DCT will get tired !

DCT is beast with all the beating i have put on it.( I have over 100+ runs at the drag strip in hot and cold weather and 10 plus track event I have not had any problems with my DCT at all and i haven't ever done any tune or anything to it. Stock Software that came with my car from the start and i am at 70,000+ miles on the car. 43,000 miles of N/A with mods smooth as the day i got it. Now i have 33,000+ miles with a SC and is smooth as before and still crisp.

DCT in these cars is very reliable. We abused the one in our test car for over two years with everything from 450 whp to 600 whp and it held up like a champ. If the clutch is in good shape you will have no trouble with the power the VT2-575 kit makes. Just like any other transmission the clutch does go out and will need to be replaced when showing signs of slipping.

Consider when they engineered the DCT..did they factor into the design that guys would be running 100+ ft-lbs tq over stock..

So why would people think that the DCT wouldnt eventualy have issues..its all a question of time..

An MT at least there's the option for uprated clutch.. issue solved..

So with that line of thought, was the rearend built with the intentions of 100+ ft-lbs over stock?

How about the following?
Driveline?
u-joints?
Half shafts?
Tail shaft?
R&P?
Come on man the MT is not an end all as you make it seem with your bias opinion... issue solved huh?

Yes, quite possibly. BMW says it's good for up to 400 ft-lbs of torque.

You guys throwing numbers around should clarify if these are tire or flywheel numbers...

Also what kind of torque, torque is what kills drivetrain components not horsepower.

^ What kind of torque? What are you talking about? The twisting kind.

Not too many mfg's reference horsepower and torque numbers to the ground.

No if you had read my post I never implied the MT could handle it either, but at least you have the option to uprate the clutch. With a DCT you dont.

Not sure why you mention all these other components, its not really relevant here, but since you are on the subject any time you increase power substantially you should also address suspension and drive train... thats the proper way of doing it....more power with stock components leads to accelerated wear and failure.
