Cars with 6MT and DCT have the exact same engine software. In the days of the E46, there was different software suited for the engine controller depending on the transmission type. You'll be on an older software version, probably 170E or 190E.

This should be done with a proper tool, and NEVER with a coding cable. In fact, the coding cable will usually render the ECU corrupted. Only factory tools or tuning cables should be used to flash vehicles with 240E. If you are planning on getting a tune, since that update is included for vehicles that don't have it, you should get them both at the same time to avoid paying twice

What is the difference between a standard K+DCAN cable and a "tuning" cable?

My DME is on zb number 7848137, how do I correlate this to a software version?

Thanks

K+DCAN cable can brick/corrupt control units if you try to program with them.

A tuning cable is specifically designed for flashing and programming control units, and does not bear this risk. It also has recovery functionality if something happens - such as a dead battery, pulling the cable out accidentally, etc..

7848137 is 240E software, so you're on the latest version. Hope this helps

Wow, my 2010 is on 140E (E89X-09-12-512). Given it's past warranty and was at the stealerships about 8 times in its life, I'm surprised they never had to do a software update. But then I had never had anything to complain about really

you should do it. I went from like a 2008 software (80E?) to the recent one (240E). I drive a MT, and it made low speed, low rpm driving a lot smoother, and it also increased mpgs.

I believe they made a ton of updates on the throttle mapping of the car over time. Benvo may have access to the base files and can see the coding changes, but I'm 100% sure through my personal observations, throttle mapping was changed.

HP increase...ehh, not so sure, I can see how changing ignition, fuel mix, and timing can effect HP, but probably not noticeable, and I'm surprised OP was able to measure it. I'm not sure the increase in HP is within the error range of the dyno.

Throttle mapping is the same but the car will drive more smoothly.

Mike,

Does anything in your tunes (or rather, can/should) take into account altitude of normal driving conditions? I know the ECU does a lot of this already just based on air density, etc.

I live at 9K ft and going down in elevation means going down to 5K ft... a lot less problems than when I lived at sea level in the heat

Air density is factored in since its a map based system. It also has a barometric pressure sensor.

The operating system for the most part.

I have a 2011 not sure if any updates have been done. Is there a devise I can purchase online to check my latest software. Dealer will refuse to give me an answer last time car was in. Really curious after reading this post. A little extra h.p wont hurt.....

Change your dealer or SA. I walked into mine and asked them to check the version and they did it. They are just lazy.

I know they are complete idiots. Now that my warranty is expired I will never take the car back.

If you have the dealership do a key read on your fob, there's a section specifically for "software integration level". If there's an update for your car it'll say "new software integration available: yes".

Not that I know of. I asked this same question awhile back. Whatever software the dealer needs to check your key is what you need. There is no secret iDrive menu or anything to go through.

I recently had my software updated through an Autologic dealer. The new software is 7848137 in Autologic talk, which I have researched to be 240E. But I cannot figure out what I had, which is 7841977 in Autologic language. Anyone know?
