I Envy Those With Large Families

Especially around the holidays. I always hear people complaining about getting together with their families during the holidays. I never really understood why. Thanksgiving dinner will consist of me, my brother, mother and father. Just like any other day. My mom's side of the family is pretty much nonexistent and my entire dad's side of the family lives overseas. It's sad that I'm 22 and I don't find much joy in the holidays. For those of you with large families, don't take them for granted! Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I feel you on that one. I haven't been able to spend thanksgiving with my family in 5 years. Usually spend it overseas or alone. Those who can visit the family enjoy it!

You mean massive body roll, a steering system that is not connected to the front wheels, and the engine note played through the speaker system?!?!?!?!

i hate holidays. all of them. i don't like birthdays either. not much for society arbitrarily assigning importance to any certain day. gratitude should be a permanent state, whether it's to veterans, your family, your country, whatever. generosity should be a permanent state. don't be an insensitive and ignorant asshole all year and be nice because it's a certain day.

I think it's a case of "grass is always greener". Sometimes you have too many people around you take them for granted and you want some peace and quiet. On the other hand if you don't then you wish you do.

like valentines too.... you don't need 1 day a year to do something special for someone. Just always be special.

My family is LOUD when everyone's together. My younger brother is like Rush Limbaugh on speed. My nephew knows I hate it when my brother starts preaching his politics, so he goads him into doing it just to screw with me. My sister will try to continue talking about whatever over my brother's loud voice, so then there are two loud voices, plus the ever-present TV noise. I usually can't wait to get out for a bit of peace and quiet. And Christmas at my sister's place means constant Christmas music everywhere in the house. Even out on the porch. It never stops.

Wifey's family is the exact opposite. If I don't carry on a conversation, there is none. Quietest people I know.

There is no happy medium. It's either non-stop noise or quiet as a church.

Ah, the holidays.

Tonight we had Thanksgiving Dinner here at Wolfgang Puck's Postrio. Not exactly a quiet meal, but tons of food. Too much, really.

i understand where you're coming from, but i have a huge family and holidays are always the most stressful time of the year because of all the family/personalities. i can't wait until they're over every year.

...joy means being surrounded with a bunch of extended extended family? Why?

ummm..if you say so.

I have a huge family and we used to all get together. We don't anymore, just me and my immediate family. MUCH MUCH better.

It was good. Could have used more gravy. The pureed sweet potatoes were delish. I usually don't like them.

Large families also have a lot of drama and discord. Also, sometimes we run outta food :|

Family is overrated and friends are underrated. I just had Thanksgiving with about 15 wonderful people, only three of which are actual blood relatives (a grandmother, an uncle and his daughter). My wife had zero blood relatives there. The year before my wife and I did pretty much the same thing with an entirely different group, none of which were relatives.

The groups consist of a few family members, long-time family friends who might as well be family, and the spouses, friends, and a few family members of those people. It adds up pretty quick.

It might be because you live in the midwest. I lived in Ohio for 3 years, and it seems like people would only spend time with their families there. Very unfriendly people- hard to make friends. Either make it happen yourself, or move.
