What is this on my bumper....

Hey guys, so I recently discovered this (see below) on my rear bumper, i have no freakin clue what it is. First I thought it was gunk, so I can remove it with claybar, that didnt work. and I think maybe someone put tape on it and ripped it off or whatever the heck it is, but nope. i tried adhesive remover, and that didnt work. its flat, and smoothe. feels like its actually below the clear coat. as you can tell the swirl marks on my rear bumper seems to be OVER that stuff, any clue what it is??? maybe its a fault in the paint?

Have you not had your car long? Seems too large to be something that you just noticed, especially if it's under the paint.

Did you have a cover on the car? It looks like something was on the car and water was trapped under it.

def not a water mark or anything, i haven't had a good "look" at the car, since ive been busy as heck, but i washed the car sunday and noticed it. it's flat, and smoothe. i thought it was like residue from tape or something, but i haven't taped the car, i thought like someone might have put tape on it. i realyl cant figure out wth that is.

Whatever it was water was trapped under it. Notice the spots through this "mark" that left all the lines.

Did a plastic bag get stuck to to the car when driving? Like a grocery bag?

The reason I am stressing on paper, bag, plastic...something sat on the paint that had water in/around/on/under it.

You know the plastic film that vehicles come over shipped in? (white film) I have done many new car preparations where water was trapped under this film from transport and it left marks exactly like you posted above. Water "runs" and lines where it sat too long on the paint.

Maybe a shopping/grocery plastic bag was blowing around and stuck to you car. The bag might have had dirt residue on it and due to the rain it stuck on your car only to eventually following off leaving a mark.

does it just wipe off like dirt?

I would try polishing it with a light polish. If it does not budge with this at least you will be able to tell if it has gone through the clear and etched it.

I would run it by a body shop you trust, seriously.

I would try a LIGHT polish first versus a compound. Start off less aggressive and work up from there.

This is EXACTLY what this is... it happened to me on a previous car many years ago. I came back to my car to find a large plastic garbage bag stuck to my hood. It had rained, then the sun came out. Mine covered a quarter of my hood. I couldn't get it out with a polish my hand. It had to be removed with an orbital... Should be pretty quick and easy with a porter cable and a light cutting pad.

Like martin said, start low and move up in aggressiveness of the polish.

You were able to feel the etching though right? OP can't feel it. A light polish like Meguiars 205 would be my first step.
