Frameless doors - Deal Breaker?
Hi guys,
Little left field, but I have been mindful ever since I hopped into my first purchased car, a 2005 WRX. One thing I loved about the car was the way the windows were the top of the door, and they didn't have the frame going around them ala older cars (And most new ones, mind). Moving then onto a 135i, and soon to be an M3 which also have the same setup, I don't think I could buy a car that wasn't like this. Call it over the top, but don't you think it adds a certain degree of sportiness (And convenience!)? I think honestly a car that wasn't like this I could not buy! The only thing that irritates me with this setup is the majority of people who feel the need to close the windows from the glass. Thoughts?

While it looks pretty nest, in a long run I would stick with framed doors: less problems (windows dont have to move up and down every time), easier to close the doors, while not a concern for you - less issues in the winter time. Just an opinion...

Yea, not a deal breaker, but I hate having to tell people to not shut the door with the window. I had my WRX window come off track from ppl doing that.
The M3's windows (at least on the coupe), actually go up and down about 1/2 inch each time you close and open the door. When it shuts, the window moves slightly upward, maybe making a better seal? My WRX's windows just pressed against the foam. |

i'm not really understanding the question. you're asking about frameless windows, or framless doors? by the way, what is a frameless door? anyway, the M3 has frameless windows, and you're saying you would not buy a car that has framed windows, correct?

wtf? I don't even know where to go with "sportiness" being defined by... frameless doors. And conveneince?... Huh? If english is not your native language, then I apologize, but your definition of these two words is not even applicable as far as I can tell.

I had frameless doors for the first time on a Mitsubishi Diamante. I hated them. BMW does them right.

I liked the look of the coupe's frameless windows. I shut my door from the edge of the window all the time and never had a problem. Now I have the sedan, and the entire window (all four sides) has a door frame. Not as cool looking, but definitely more solid design.

How is that? Coupe has a longer door, so the opening will be even smaller... unless you really climb out the window...

LOL. Looks like all the E90 and DCT guys I rag on are getting their revenge on?
No need to hate guys. Yes English is my native language, and yes I meant frameless windows but I wrote the thread at work, in a hurry. It's amazing how you give me stick yet most of your own American colloquialisms don't make sense themselves 'I could care less'...Anyone? Anyway back on topic, I think it adds a degree of sportiness, and if it doesn't... I dunno, it still looks cool. And that was the subject of my discussion, is it an important part of a car for you guys when purchasing.

When I fly past people with frameless windows they can't tell if I have window frames or not.

I think it is pretty obvious that nobody buys are doesn't buy a car because the doors have frames around the windows or not. Seriously who gives a fuck about that? It has no bearing on how the car handles or drives.

It should have pointed out that I think your idea of the relationship between windows and sportiness, performance or whatever is ridiculous! You are completely missing the point of the M3 or any sports car for that matter. Now if you don't want to buy a car because of this that's cool, but I wouldn't expect people to understand this relationship you are trying to establish on whether a car with framed windows isn't as performance oriented as one without. I think it is asinine. Hopefully that gets my point across a bit better ...
