I suggest you order a factory painted rear bumper skin..... Although they are not available on the US parts catalogue they are indeed available in the European parts catalogue. Any shop like IND, Rennspec, or Alekshop will be able to use their sources in Europe to get one for you. IMO this is the only option to have factory paint that is the proper texture and match.
The only problem with this option is the fact that it will take 4-6 weeks to receive it, the choice is yours. P.S.: Here is the part number for the one you need 51110433104 , all you need to do is give the company who orders it for you your paint code and it will come painted!!! |

It seems like you will have to go through his insurance. My advice to you would be to document the damage with pictures. If/when you sell the car, explain the accident and show them the pictures. If you showed me pictures of that damage and the repairs looked good visually, it wouldn't bother me as a buyer.

IMO, I would NOT get a factory painted bumper. It likely won't match. Paint comes to the factory in batches that can vary in color. Unless the bumper is painted with the same batch that your car was (not gonna happen), it won't match. On the other hand, a good shop will be able to match the paint AND the texture. The trick is finding a good shop...

I think the damage is minor (perhaps the picture is missleadin me), in any case a new bumper, paint and install might run you $1,500- US I'm thinking.

That's not worth a new bumper IMO, or even repainting for that matter IMO. A skilled detailer can make that liveable. At the very most, that area can be repainted. If you get a whole new pre-painted bumper, it likely won't match at the quarter panels and trunk.

That is not true, that bumper can be repaired. Some of you guys really think you know collision work. It's amazing. OP, if you so choose to the replace the bumper, that's all you. But it CAN be fixed. This is exactly how BMW shops rip people off everyday. Telling people everything needs to be replaced. That way they get paid to do every little thing. Bumper needs to be removed, body filler, prime, repainted and re-installed. That is it. A good body man can do that body work with his eyes closed. My source? I have my own body shop. And i just saw someone suggest getting a factory painted bumper? Are you kidding? Wait a month for a bumper, god knows what condition it will be in when it arrives, and who knows if the color will match? Man, i feel sorry for the guy who hit you if you really make him shell out 5k for a BMW bumper. Don't be ridiculous, this isn't an exotic. |

Damage doesnt look that bad I dont see how it can be over $1000+ to fix. Bodyshop can just remove the bumper, refurbish and respray for what $400? Plus this way you wont be any accident recorded against your car. I had a guy crash into the back of my R8 at probably about 5MPH there was no noticeable damage except the fog light at the bottom was broken. He gave me about $300 for a new foglight which I fitted myself. I could have been anal and demanded a new bumper etc. But why? It just forces the other person to go thru the insurance and results in your car having an accident on its history. Its not worth it.

so after speaking with IND and a few other shops it looks like BMW does not offer pre painted items any longer. Seeing on how the damage was quite minor i've decided to go with a local body shop called autobuggati they are the official paint shop of ferrari and austin m. in eastern canada. They are also the exclusive saleen and panos dealers of eastern canada so i trust there work. The shop manager explained that the damage was extremely minor and no putty would be needed. Also they will only be painting that spot of the scratch on the bumper and clear the rest so in part it will be original paint.
As for IND all i can say is thumbs up to their excellent customers service! I spoke with Andrew and he was able to answer any and all questions i had on the euro bumpers, and with which i ordered a euro front bumper. Can wait to receive and install will post pics as soon as its done! Ps I forgot to mention i had auto bugatti remove the rear bumper from the car and i had it flat bedded back home! Now thats anal! Will return when it's had time to cure in the paint booth! |
