So I just drove around an S2000

I used to drive one frequently, the girlfriend's, and since I got my 335i I just have not had the urge. Well, I drove it again today and was kind of hating it. Then, before I knew it, I was blasting it wide open, throwing it through curves, rev matching, making tons of noise, and just having a good time with the top down.

I had forgotten how much fun it is to drive a slow car fast. It almost makes me wish I would have bought a Subaru BRZ back before I got the 335i. Almost. I still love my car for its do everything ability. And power. There is no substitute for that torque it provides, all while being comfortable and accommodating.

I can agree to that, although it averages 27 mpg and moves along pretty well around town. In the end it is best suited to be a weekend car on nice days.

Its daily driveability or practicality is no better or worse than any other roadster and "not enough torque for it to be fun" is pure nonsense.

I daily drove it for 5 years. It was never a problem. Any car that can get from 0-60 in 5 seconds and has 6 gears has plenty of ooomph. You can pass cars on the highway easily with no downshifts. It has plenty juice. It feel funny coming from a 335, but its still plenty of torque to get where you want quickly.

Again, difference in opinion. I think they sound badass, stock or properly sorted...

Mine with bolt-ons and a tune was a little faster than E46 M3s until about 140 MPH. Not fast by any means, but not shabby for circa 2002.

i like fast cars, i see why people like slower drivers car. beucase you can push them to the limits easyer. never been into that.

i would never conider a s2000 or brz. your 335 is such a better car.

great car for the track....TERRIBLE car for city/daily driving....unless you want to look like a jackass grinding your car out at 5k-6k RPM and above in commute traffic....no thanks! It's dog slow at low RPMs....at least every time i've driven one i thought so.

I test drove a couple about 8 years ago.
I was so surprised how slow they are while engine is screaming at 7-8.5K rpm (no offense to owners or previous owners). I got scared of all the wear and tear I would put on the engine plus not sure if it was fun driving it (just my opinion). I do like how it looks on the outside - I just wished it had more oomph, I would have bought one in a heartbeat.

Prior to my F30, I had an AP1 S2000. I sold it which I've had remorse about it for the last 6 months. Great car, horrible for a daily driver but I made it work. Here the magic to the S2000, you need to drive it like you hate it (above 6000 RPM). Once you do that the car really comes together. It's not for everyone. Punishing ride, loud road noise, stereo that can't compete with aforementioned road noise, near useless in any sort of weather, bottoming out on anything taller than book even though the car was stock ride height, interior which makes a MRI chamber seem spacious... All part of the charm. Loved almost every minute of it.

For me personally the best part of the car was the shifter. It's really a precision instrument. I had intended to buy a manual F30 but was disappointed with it in the test drive, so took the sport auto instead. Honda hit a home run with this one.

I had a couple S2000's and they're great cars. Sold my first one as it just wasn't a great DD IMO but all of mine have been turbocharged (~400WHP) and were a blast to drive. Greatest gearbox of any car I've ever owned and I have had P-cars, M-cars, etc. The S2000 (AP1) is near perfect in stock form...throw a nice turbo on there and the brakes and chassis handle it wonderfully.

That's if you want to really accelerate. You don't have to drive it like that if you want to blend in with traffic or pass cars on the highway (without making a point). But the great thing about the car is that you can drive it like you hate it, day in and day out, without worrying about ever breaking anything. The damn lil car is pretty much bulletproof. And maintenance is cheap also. I really miss that lil car (6 years since selling it).

I know exactly how you feel. I started out in a Z4 coupe with N52 motor. I loved driving that car and I eventually made it a weekend/track car. I recently picked up a 135is which is far more comfortable and faster than the Z4. I love the gobs of torque that comes with this motor however whenever I hop into the Z, I realize the Z is still a more fun car to drive. The truth is faster does not equal fun, in fact cruising straight line and passing on the freeway is painfully boring. In my Z4 I'm always rowing through the gears, rev match, HT, you name it -- and this isn't a DCT vs manual discussion neither. I've driven a 6MT n54/55 but the n52 is more engaging (because it's slower).

Since you're talking about the limits, on track a bone stock S2k or BRZ is way better car than 335, no comparison.

Agree 100%. Mine was absolutely bulletproof even after a number of "upgrades"!
