Need Help - Failed Bank 2 Pre Cat 02 Sensor
Okay, so 'Service Engine Soon' light came on while driving yesterday. Took the M into Russell BMW this morning. They said it was the 'Bank 2 Pre Cat 02 Sensor' that failed. Oh, and they said a whole bunch of other crap (tires, mount, balance, blah, blah..stick it in my pooper...) estimated at $2,266.44. I laughed and picked up the car and paid $87 for the damn diagnostic test.
So, anyone help me out with a better place to buy a new 02 Sensor? Dealer charges $132hr, and estimated 2 1/2 hr job...WTF...really. Anyways, thoughts? Saw this one online: Makes > 2009 BMW > M3 > Emission System > Oxygen Sensor Part Number/ Brand / Description 17039 Bosch OEM / Oxygen Sensor; Front Left/Right before Cat;; 340mm 2 per car. $222.02 $142.31 SALE Last edited by GOVCO; 07-11-2013 at 08:37 PM.. |

Do you know what the OEM PN is? You can check BMW of FFX's parts site.

Actually, I bought an M3 under warranty...and now it's out of warranty... man. And for what I expect [or hope]..is that someone would say, you can buy genuine OEM parts here, for much cheaper. Kinda like the first responder.

Not sure where you live but get an estimate from an independent shop in the area (search this forum for recommendations). Labor hours are always cheaper and usually on a job that big, the $ difference for parts are minimal.

I'm new to BMW where everything is more complicated but on a lesser car an O2 sensor just screws into a bung in the exhaust. I would absolutely look into DIY, if the sensor is easily accessible and not frozen in place it should be an easy remove and replace.
Good luck. |

Unbolt the cover plate under the front 1/3 of the car and look before the cats, just behind the headers. There they are, waiting to be unplugged, unscrewed, and replaced. Should take an hour, because you don't have a lift and it's a PITA to get the cover on and off working on jackstands. This is like the dealer book time for brake pads, which is over two hours. What is the mechanic going to be doing for two hours? It's a 45-min. job even if you suck at it. |

http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...856441&page=14 http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthr...856441&page=17 anyways, trying to help you save a bit here: Now that you have the OEM part numbers handy, go to bmw FFX online parts order (or tischer since you're in MD) and and buy your parts for cheap (it always helps to do a comparison shop as Checkmate provided you another price earlier): http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=852339 I also recommend negotiating a fixed price for labor at a independent shop. I can only refer my local NoVA shop J&F Motors in Arlington, VA. (they also provide a shuttle to metro, if needed) As others have said, if you have a lift, it sounds like a 1 hour job, if shops and dealers are quoting you 2 hours, I would try to negotiate for a fixed price like 1.25 hour or 1.5 hours and rationalize with them. Make sure J&F can also clear the CEL for you too. good luck Last edited by mdosu; 07-25-2013 at 01:02 PM.. |
