If you care about performance, go with the Gruppe M. It actually added power in an independent dyno test, while the AFE added no power. But it is expensive for the power it provides.

AFE intake plus exhaust:

GruppeM intake plus exhaust:

And GruppeM intake plus exhaust plus GIAC tune:

If you care about performance, leave it stock and buy a good filter. Intake systems are a waste, as the factory system is just about as good as it gets.

The AFE stuff seems to be a fail. Go with anything else.

Did you actually read the article? It even stated that there were dyno issues. My E46 M3 dyno'd 288rwhp bone stock. KitW dyno'd his AFE and got 6rwhp peak and up to 8-10rwhp in the midrange with the AFE STg. 2 intake. Just a tad better than what a drop in gives you, but you do get more intake roar than just a drop in.

The dyno once again..

I for one am very happy with my AFE, the intake roar along with the exhaust makes a beautiful symphony...

Of the two get the AFE and save some money, the new STG 2. intake uses the factory airbox so it looks pretty much OEM.

Totally pointless. Maybe even risky particularly if you go with an oiled filter. Save your $. It did make a bit of a difference on E46 but the E9x intake is quite well designed.

The airbox is well designed. Intake Charge pipe and filter media definitely can use help.

I think your comment is pretty spot on. If you care about looks, the GruppeM certainly is a great thing to look at, but in terms of performance, you'll still see good gains coming from both intakes.

Personal preference for me is aFe as you'll be able to retain some of that cash that you would have used on the GruppeM for other mods

Yes, I even read the part about how they went back to AFE a second time several weeks later and still could not find the claimed power.

As others have demonstrated here, you can easily find an 8 rwhp variation among a series of dyno runs on these cars and use the low one as the base and the best one to "prove" the gain of your mod.

All AFE could do was "suggest" that maybe something was wrong with their dyno for the original test and also weeks later for the second chance.

I went with a K&N drop in filter.

Had 2 people running the Gruppe M on their e92 M3, and both have agreed that there was a loss in power, one of them even did a dyno Stock vs. Gruppe M and found a drop in 10 HP on the aftermarket CAI. Go figure.

In addition to those, I would look at just filters like those offered by MS, afe, bmc, aa, etc. Also look at charge pipes from MS and Dinan. Look for dynos, count your money, decide how much you want to spend for how much hp. Good luck.

Dinan! All intakes make about the same power give or take. Intakes are a sound AND HP mod, so don't expect more than 10 HP from it. Some are also a cosmetic mod (Dinan and Gruppe M). Dinan has all three qualities PLUS OEM fitment. I have heard stories about aftermarket intakes having fitment issues. You don't want a loose intake under your hood do you? Dinan if you want all the qualities plus OEM fitment. Gruppe M is also good but it's x2 Dinan's money. Your pick!

FYI, I am not a Dinan fan. I don't have a single Dinan mod on my car. I am just someone that is also thinking about getting an intake soon and Dinan seems to be the best.

I have the GruppeM. Pricey...yes, beautiful to look at...yes, intoxicating to listen to....yes. Gains? Maybe, but the sound is where I focus for my DD. got a good price, and it's still tough to swallow!
