Question Maintenance schedule

Since our cars are now on a variable maintenance schedule which is individually determined by driving style and conditions I am having a tough time figuring out what the rough time lines are for various maintenance items. Of course there is my small mistrust of technology as well. Does BMW actually publish and rough timelines for various maintenance activity? Has anyone had their 2nd maintenance service (after the initial 1200 mi one). What was your mileage and what was done?

There is a counter until your next service located where the odometer is usually. When you first start the car, you will see it. I just had my 1200 mile done and it says 14000 miles to service. I have no idea if this takes in to account how I HAVE drivne the car already, or if it "resets" to the default 15000 mile inciment. It will be interesting to see if it adjusts itself at all.

I don't think anybody has 15000 miles on their car yet, but it would be interesting to see what the "counter" says on the higher mileage cars....if it is still about at the 15000 mile mark, or has adjusted at all...also be good to know each reporting persons driving behavior to look for any correlation. Hell...might as well start now.

I will go first

POST YOUR MILEAGE TO NEXT SERVICE

Current Mileage (odo): 1,200
Mileage to next service (as indicated upon startup): 14,000
Approx Mileage at next service: 15,000
Driving style (mellow/aggressive): 70/30
Average MPG: 15.5

Reply and fill in for your car...let's see if there is any correlation to driving style and indicated service. MPG should be a decent indicator of driving style.

To next service: 9000
Appr. at next service: 16,890
Driving style: 80/20 mellow highway/aggressive
MPG: 17.5

I run a lot of highway miles...about 110 per day. But I also run about 25-30 city miles and run it pretty hard then. I can also replace the 110 highway miles with mountain roads that I run VERY hard and do about once per week.

Are you guys going to change the engine oil every 15k miles? Isn't that bad for the engine? I would think changing engine oil every 5-7k miles would be better for the engine but I'm no expert.

It really depends on what you do. Track the car, probably a good idea to change the fluids on an accelerated schedule. In most cases the dealers time is probably going to be fine. But, some people swear on a 7500 mile interval.

just leave the schedule to the computer... supposedly it will send message to service center and they will call you to confirm.

I dunno about you guys but im going to change my oil again at 7,500 miles, and so on. Im just very anal retentive about this stuff. Even though I dont track or drive my baby too hard, it doesnt hurt to keep the fluids fresh.

mileage: 1680
next service indicated: 15,000
driving: 60/40
MPG: 14-16

Oil change every 5000km (3000m). Ignore everything the book tells you. Unless you plan to trade the car every couple of years pay a few bucks and look after the thing properly. Otherwise buy a Honda.

and I know you have done some tracking, so it is interesting to see that you are still at about 15,000 for your next service.

Lets keep it simple and stick to OIL CHANGE only.

So far, we have some decent variation in mileage, which appears to correlate (roughly) with how people believe they drive. There is at least one poster that has several track days already too. The cars (most of them) with lower mpg indicate about the 15K mark for oil change. The one poster with nearly 18 mpg indicates nearly 17,000 miles. Interesting... keep the data/post comin'.

I plan to change my oil every 5K. I am not too worried about the lubrication part of the oil, rather the additives that get consumed from it. Also, contamination from fuel adds to it. For me, its 5K intervals, period. IMHO, it is cheap insurance.

I can never figure out why someone would NOT believe that BMW knows what is best for the car that they designed, engineered, built, and has won critical acclaim over. They didn't miss a beat when it came to these elements, but don't know when the oil needs to be changed?

Not saying it's a bad idea to change the oil earlier, it just seems like a waste of time and money to me.

Guys, don't know if this helps but when the 335is first came out they were all showing about 15000 for the first oil change (obviously no break in service for those cars) and many discussed over an over how there is no way a turboed car running at 250 degrees should go 15k miles between oil changes.

I think that same disbelief is probably applicable for the S65, especially for those who drive her in a more "spirited" manner. I think for those who lease, they don't care about long term effects, for those of us who own, I think even with a good synthetic, you are better off every 7500 at most.

The other items that are serviced (fluids and filters) at the recommended intervals I think are fine to be left to those intervals but for oil, I would not wait, just as I didn't on my e92 335i for 15k to pass by.

To each his own my friend!

Like I said, I think it is cheap insurance. For me, the peace of mind is worth the price of oil, even if it serves no purpose for the car.

Current mileage: 2331
Miles 'till next service: 14000
Approx miles @ next service: 16,331
Driving style (mild / aggressive): 80/20
Driving split (highway / city): 90/10
Avg MPG to-date: 17.5

Also, I think I'm going to stick with the scheduled maintenance. If BMW says my oil gets changed every 15K miles, then that's what I'm doing. Did the same thing with my E46. Service intervals were in 15K increments (including oil changes)... sold it with over 100K on the odometer and had absolutely NO problems with the engine whatsoever throughout my 4.5 years of ownership. The car was literally in for service once every eight months or so. It was an extremely reliable car, and I'm hoping my new M3 behaves the same.

I have been a full synthetic and change it every 5k mi guy in the past. I am leaning toward sticking with that but do also believe BMW knows something. They are, however, in a bit of a conflict of interest position as they have to pay for the maintenance for the first 50k mi so it is very much in their interest to minimize their costs associated with this. I think oil changes every 7500 unless tracked might be my compromise.

I think the free maintenance is only available in the US market -- might be available in a few others as well. I could be wrong about this though. Regardless, I don't think BMW would risk their global reputation just to save a few bucks on maintenance outlay in a few markets.

Naturally there's no harm in changing oil more often than prescribed, but I just don't want the hassle. If the manufacturer says I won't need an oil change for 15K miles, I'll take the peace of mind and enjoy driving every one of those 15K miles.

Miles so far - 4200
Driving mellow/agressive - 70/30%
Roads/highway - 80/20%

I've worked on engines, jet engines, lawn mowers, etc. And I've seen oil filters of high miles and low miles and let me tell you, there is a huge difference in the detereration of the filter element. I remember changing the oil of a buddy's '99 540i and the filter element was practically fused to the plastic filter center support housing. It looked like shit! On my Saab, I allways changed it at 3,000 miles and the filter's allways looked clean and that car has now 60K+ and runs like a champ. Saab recomends 15,000 mile oil changes. Ya, sure!

Change your oil about 5-7K miles if you value your M3. If not, get a GM or rice burner.
