Post Track-Day Cleanup

This stuff is caked on the inside of my front wheels and I have a few splatters of it in the rear too. What is it?

I assume it's tire or tar from the track but I don't know why it's stuck to the inside of my wheels.

BTW These wheels were clean before the TD.

This happened on my wheels too. I assumed it was tire chunks from the track surface.

I must be cooking my tires then because I've already picked half of them off before taking the pic and they are frozen on. I just don't see how they get on the inside of my wheel.

It's actually melted brake pad material. It's melted off chunks of brake pad that splattered on the wheel. If this is what it is, it'll be hard to the touch and you have to scrape it off. Happens all the time if you are using street brake pads.

Some of the splats are really hard and have to be scraped off with a plastic razor - The majority of them are rubbery though.

I'm using the pads that came with my Brembo GT's (Ferodo 2500's)

Yeah.. that'll do it. DS2500s aren't designed for track use. It's a good street pad but they chunk apart when they overheat.

Tire rubber wouldn't stick to the inside of the wheel. They come off and fall to the ground or stick to the outside of the car, not inside the wheel.

That's called OPR. Other People's Rubber. Clag. Marbles. Watch a Formula 1 race and hear David Hobbs talk about it at least 10 times.

And OPR absolutely will stick to the inside of the wheel, it happens to me all the time. The wheels just need to get hot enough. My wheels are in the 200+ degree range, and much hotter at the hub face, after a race and that's with a cooldown lap. If that was brake pads there wouldn't be any pad left in the calipers.

I stand corrected.. it does look like tire marbles stuck to the rim.

Melted brake pad material looks more chunk-like rock shaped.

I had some similar ones on my back window - definitely OPR. Did not damage the tint or rear seat leather at all, but I freaked a bit when I first saw them inside the car.

Yup...I just picked a bunch of tire junk off of my wheels. Normal. If that was brake pad material...you probably wouldn't be posting this question. Instead something like..."I was on the track and I lost my brakes."

You'll find that keeping your tracks wheels clean is futile, especially if you're anal retentive and worry about cleaning the inner barrel. Which is why I use black wheels...I just hose them off occasionally. Just sucks whenever I brush up against them with pants on.

Those OP..... are the hellish little balls of rubber that plague my car. I hate hate hate them lol. Get some Purple Power from Home Depot, Autozone, etc. to get it off.

im curious about this comment. arent the ds2500s a fairly high MOT pad for a street pad which should translate into much better usablility on the track.

I think it really depends on the track. Disapr was on Texas World Speedway...not hard on brakes at all.
