My feeling is that most of the extra weight went to the stiffening of the car. I think that itself took up a lot of weight. I know it sounds crazy but there just isnt any other factors that could attribute for the increase. Hell the LSDs and Brakes wont be that big a difference. I think its all in the chasis and how its put together.

Cheers!

You can also feel the extra weight in the handling and steering despite the M3s superior suspension and tires. The real problem when you start comparing the M3 to the 335i is the torque / weight ratio.

M3 Sedan 12.6 lb /lb-ft torque
M3 Coupe 12.6 lb / lb-ft torque
335i Sedan 12.0 lb /lb-ft torque
335i Coupe 11.9 lb /lb-ft torque

The issue is even more pronounced when you consider that BMW has substantially underrated the 335i engine--not the case in the M3. As automobile mag and several other dyno tests have found, the 335i is actually closer to 350-360lb-ft of torque.

This makes it:
335i Sedan ~10 lb /lb-ft torque
335i Coupe ~10 lb /lb-ft torque

The 335i is caring around ~2lb less per lb-ft or torque than the M3!

This explains why the M3 does not feel as quick off the line compared to the 335i. The M3 needs a diet. :-(

But you also have to take gearing into account for this comparison. Here's a long thread with some discussion of torque at the wheels for the two cars.

[edit] sorry, I meant to respond the the "bigger balls" comment. Your reasons are sensible.

Actually...

...you can thank F/I for that. F/I cars always 'feel' faster.
