E90 M3 hands down. Better performing, better looking, newer, and most importantly it's more fun to drive.

Performance wise, definitely the for the newer e90 M3. Looks, it's obviously a matter of opinion, but for me the RS4 wins that one hands down even if it's already 4 years old.

I agre, the RS4 (and Audis in general) is better looking than both the E90 and E92. If that were my primary decision criteria, I would not have purchased the E90.

As I kind of alluded to earlier, M3 DCT > RS4 > M3 MT... If you are after a manual then I'd go the RS4. The gearing of the M3 MT is too tall for my liking - the RS4 has similar gearing to the DCT.

Here's a few pics of my old RS4 - beautiful, I don't think the M3 really comes close, but is all subjective of course...

My favourite view of the RS4 is the rear...

The rear of the RS4 is probably one of it's finest features and one which quite a lot of other drivers happen to see. Very considerate of Audi to make that view so pleasant.

i'd take it over an E90...but not an E92.

Too bad no one ever sees the rear end of the RS4 except for minivans and souped up Civics.

BMW drivers only see disappearing RS4 headlights in the rearview

You're a good laugh TB.

Maybe I was referring to wet and icy conditions. Anyway there is no denying that the RS4 has one of the nicest butts in the business.

Yes the RS4 is the choice of Pizza delivery boys.... They need to earn their tips in all weather conditions.

RS4, overpriced and under delivers. Looks good, but bang for buck, its a dog. The choice is easy, E90 M3.

Gearing is too tall on an MT vs a DCT? It's too tall if you plan on building a dragster, but for streetablity, its damn near perfect. Top gear revs pretty high when cruising, so gearing being too tall is the first I've heard that. Have you driven the car past 3rd gear? Maybe they should gear it like a civic, and keep the top speed around 130. Never mind the 414hp, 6 gears and 170+ top speed capability.

Many RS4's don't deliver the promised 420DIN BHP but maybe 380/390 max.

My friend's RS4 had 415 stock and he was lucky(...)

Can you back this up with some evidence? This is the first I've heard that the RS4 was underrated, and frankly, I am not buying it...yet.

If they are going to show dyno results then I am definitely not buying it. Especially when you compare 1/4mile runs to an M3 is shows that the RS4 is right up there and that is with 4 driven wheels and extra weight to haul around. If anything I would say that the RS4 is underrated.

P.S.

Bruce, I take it you might overrated?

All RS4's roughly perfomes 390-400bhp (crank). But, you can - easy - update them with better software, and then they do run appr. 415-420 bhp and gain some torque to. So, as for performance, they are equal to me.

For the looks, I love the RS4. For me it is the better looking car. For the driving: even I (not a racedriver at all), could go 90* on max.speed through corners with a RS4!! The RS4 gives you a very save drive. By the way, the car sounds fantastic! But, I know a lot of people who prefer the M3, because of it's - slightly - better performance and RWD cick.
But I would choose the RS4, in my situation.

Exactly Ferdinand(acs1.35i), here the EU Continental RS4's all had that similar problem but I wll ask my friend(the one with the RS4) because he told me that. My ex 335i is almost as fast as his RS4 in any circumstance but beyond 140mph the RS4 is faster. My E90 M3 is a big bit faster than his RS4....we tested it over and over.

Still not buying it:A pity, that's your problem, not mine.

Robin Hood agrees with you, but can't quote evidence. Can you?

I have no axe to grind here, and don't really care either way, but again, this is the first I've heard that RS4s didn't make advertised power, so I'm looking for something (from either of you) that would tend to support your viewpoint.

Of course, the RS4 would tend to show lower numbers on a chassis dyno because of its drive train, so unless they are really way low, that's not evidence.

Asked the VAG guy I know about this and it seems there is something to what Robin Hood is saying. Early examples for the RS4 (first car with this engine) had a glitch which was present in the first few months of production but said that a recall was present to fix and was out more than a year ago.

Couldn't tell me how much of a drop off in power it was but that it effected the very top end of the rev range so was not noticeable in almost every situation other than full throttle acceleration runs.

Apologizes RH.

So the recall fixed the problem?

I can deal with attitude, but I'm not sure why I'm getting it from you.

I was genuinely curious about Audi overrating anything, so I asked for evidence, and apparently that pissed you off. It's OK, I guess, but that's a mightly short fuse you're running around with.

I did a recall search, and came up short, which would tend to indicate that those cars didn't make it to the U.S.

That would of course explain why I hadn't heard the news.
