Rockchips on rocks and behind wheels?

I'm hearing conflicting things on this, 2 very reputable people/shops in the BMW community have told me clearbraing these areas is not worth it. Whereas I also hear people "not having any paint left", I'm beginning to think it has more to do with geography than anything else. My e39 of 11years which spent most its time in NYC only has chips on the front bumper and bottom 4 inches of hood+fenders. Clearbraing isn't cheap, guys with higher than 10,000 miles who frequent the 10, 405, 101, and 5 freeways please let me know if you get damage behind the wheels and on the rockers.

If you could take pics, I will be infinitely grateful.
