First speeding ticket.. Any suggestions?

Fellow new yorkers... Last night I received my first speeding ticket. officer states i was going 90 in a 55. I was in nassau. Was I going that fast? I really dont know, I was deff going faster then 55mph, but not quite sure i was going 90. He laso got me for unsafely switching lanes and switching lanes without signaling. Altho that seems like the same thing, I dont believe I did that, either way, i know my word against his wont matter. So, for people mwho have gone throug this. What do u guys suggest i do? I know a really good lawyer, but should I look at other options? BTW, right after he said, "IM USSUING YOU BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH" he turns around and says, " nice car" lmaooo... Thats after he handed me a 6 foot long ticket.

Dude, Nassau is getting crazy with ticketing. Look at all the traffic cameras that have recently been installed. I guess we dont pay enough already in taxes (fucking joke)

As for your situation and speaking from major experience in the past. PLEAD NOT GUILTY...GET A LAWYER. That cop could have arrested you for that speed. You will lose your license if you dont cut a good deal with the DA. Any jerkoff lawyer will do a better job than you can.

Any good lawyer from nassau should get you down to a small 2 or 3 point
(no turn signal or illegal right on red)violation and a parking ticket or 2.

Where were you when you got the ticket? Troopers like to hide out in certain spots on the Northern State Pkwy.

That won't help you if you are going 40 over.

It will if it gives you a chance to slow down before the cop catches you. If they use instant on with the radar you're screwed. But laser jammers do work if you get a good one. But obviously they won't make you immune to tickets.

ha, yea, they won't help you if you're being paced. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do, cops can pretty much say anything they want. However you don't have to throw your V1 in the back, they are perfectly legal in NY.

Any good lawyer will get that reduced significantly. I have two friends that have used a guy who got them both great results. I can try to get you his name if you want/need it. Let me know if you do.

NY Ticket

I received a speeding ticket in NY a few years back. At the advice of a friend I contested the ticket. This makes the officer show up in court and you get another chance to "reason" with him. Just show up early on your court date and seek him out and see if he'll either lower it or change it to some other infraction. Tell him you are worried about your insurance rates or something along those lines. My ticket was for 80 something in a 65 and I ended up with failure to obey a traffic device. You'll probably incurr court fees for this manuver but it may be worth it. Good luck.

Good info. Thank u buddy... Everyone says no matter what, plead not guilty and take it from there. I most likely will hire a lawyer... Will cost a bit but deff worth it. I have a clean record and dont want to risk it. altho ur suggestion does sound good.

You think you can reason with the cop who has written the speed on the ticket and shows up in traffic court? That make ZERO sense.

Get a lawyer and let him reason with the DA. After you pay the fine, go take a safe driving class and it will be like nothing ever happened.

Don't forget NY has that stupid DRP (Driver Responsibility Program). 90 in a 55 automatically qualifies as 6 or more points, which means in addition to the fine they will try to make you pay another $300 over the next 3 years.

Fight it... good luck

This is exactly what Im doing. Already called the lawyer. Said these tickets should b fairly easy to take care of. hes had a lot worse. My friend had 26pts and the lawyer got it reduced to 2 points. Did the driver resposibility class and they came off. Didnt even have to do the class, just had to pay 100 bucks. Most likely After its all said and done it will prob cost me around 1500 and 0 points on my license.

My two cents.

I also received some tickets in the past year, 1 time it was for 2 infractions (it seems you have 3 in the case you site). Basically its going to come down to money.

The only way you can get out of most of the points (I really doubt your lawyer can get you off on all the infractions) is to pay fees. Basically just showing up with a lawyer, your lawyer can bring down some of the infractions to lower items but with 3 infractions including the speeding one, its going to be hard to be all knocked off.

The DA with a lawyer will review your case history, if you have a clean record, that will help you. So they will reduce it to a few points, and you will have the option to pay off the remaining points for a cash fee.

In my case I had speeding and illegal lane change. Just showing up (sans lawyer) to court, the DA took off the illegal lane change (FYI - I had a clean record to that point). But the speeding was a 4 points infraction, which they reduced to 2 points, and then let me pay off the remaining 2 points for cash (there is some sort of legal term for it, 89.1 or something like that). So I ended up coming out of court with no points and some cash out of pocket (about $250.00).

Again with your case, with 3 infractions plus 1 being a 6 point speeding infraction, you will probably come out with some points and out of a bucket of cash. But I do agree, you should bring a lawyer with you as your best bet.

Good luck.
