Liking those bearings a lot! Calico FTW
Did you ever think of having a custom set of cams made for this car? I remember on my supercharged 330 I had Schrick make me a custom profile and it was Reallllly nice with the boost.

When I was in Cali, I met with a guy who builds race engines. Not micky mouse race engines, I'm talking Indy-500 winners, Le-Mans winners, and 24-hours of Daytona winners. Right now he's building a monster stroked and blown E92/S65 with stand alone ECU. He designed his own S65 dry sump, designed his own rod studs, and is in the elite club of people who have built an Indy-500 winning motor. The dude's got some serious racing pedigree if you know what I mean. He gave me all the specs he measured on the S65, told me all the problems with the clearances, how the factory specs might be the cause of the blown motors, and why the factory clearances might be safe for a grocery-getter, but not safe if you plan to push the motor. To be safe, he makes his S65 cranks with extra journal clearance and extra side-play clearance as well. He doesn't like coated bearings because they don't hold up well, they reduce the clearance, the coatings doen't wear evenly, and when the coatings do wear you end up with too much clearance. And besides he said...they went out of vogue about 15 years ago among the big race engine builders. He had me sold and his pedigree spoke for itself. I was sending my crank, rods, and pistons out to him for sizing and balancing. But then I got home and changed my mind. I was afraid that the extra clearance might cause a drop in oil pressure and since this guy's motor hasn't fired up yet, there's no data to prove one way or the other. My buddies out here have run coated bearings before and didn't have any problems. Izzy and Drew are running coated bearings and haven't had any problems. So at the end of the day I decided to go for the coated bearings. But if I had lived out in Cali, I probably would have gone the other route. |

That is the stuff to mull over! Thanks for that info. I understand how a race engine builder to that level looks at things the way you described. I grew up next door to a tractor pull family and the old man was a fabricator on the side of building these ridiculous motors in his personal machine shop. I think you made the right choice for any sort of longevity. Just have be a little more frequent at looking at the bottom end when almost doubling HP |
