BFG R1 vs R1-S for fall/winter tracking

Did a quick search, but i need some quick advice......

I'm looking to do a couple more track events this month at VIR and was looking at the BFG R1-S tires. I have had R1's and loved them but i was thinking since i only need them for 3 or 4 track days (12-16 heat cycles) and the temps are cooler in November maybe the S's may be the better choice? Any advice?

I was at VIR this weekend with the regular R1

Worked perfectly. After giving them some love they stick like glue! I've never tried the 'S' so I can't comment

Hey Ian. Have used both and love em. Both are very sticky and lasted about the same number of days. R1S being softer compound should get up to temp quicker (time trialer) but not last quite as long. In real world couldn't really tell the difference--but after looking back at data most of my fastest laps were on R1S and got just about the same amount of days on them (vs. R1), maybe a little less. I have actually thought along the same lines as you --that R1S would be better in colder weather but couldn't really validate it--would have to mount both sets and do a side by side comparo, tough to do...

Have second set of R1S on now with a couple of days on them, heading up to VIR with TrackDaze this weekend. You gonna be there?!

Hey Bill, long time no see man. It's been a busy ass year.... only been to the track once this year so looking to cram a few in before it gets too cold. New house, new job, etc...

Would love to do trackdaze since they do the grand course, but won't make that one. Was looking at PCA and Cobra club events next weekend and the weekend after. Based on what you say I may try out the R1-S's. They are quite a bit cheaper too so that's always a good thing.

I'll be at VIR with trackdaze next week. I've only done the north course, looking forward to full and grand! I'm currently on R1, but am planning to try bridgestone RE-71R's as my next track tire.

VIR Full is my favorite. The Grand Course (aka, the VIRburgring) is definitely unique and quite a treat. this is the only event all year where they run it. I'll definitely look for you there.
