Your engine will thank you shifting a little sooner. Running it to redline every time will make the engine run hotter and suck more fuel.

i only have a few days of track experience, but i feel like this is something that you'll learn quite simply by doing it rather than reading/talking about it. i have a dct and sometimes redline comes up quick from 2-3-4. you'll lose more time bouncing off the rev limiter trying to "wring out" all the power rather than shifting slightly "early" (early being used subjectively). another factor is upsetting the balance of the car with a hard, wide open throttle shift (if you're in a turn). and if you're not wide open, might as well shift "early" and be as smooth as possible.
the only time i take it slightly above 8k is on straights when i can really watch the needle.

Torque curve. LOL. It's an E92 M3.

When I was a new driver, my second event was VIR North Course. I did an entire SESSION in 4th gear and never noticed the difference.

This is no playstation GT-R! Driver involvement is what makes this whole track game fun. The DCT cars already catch undeserved flack for not using our left foot (except for braking in complex corners) but hands-eyes-feet-brain, etc, all involved in the driving process. I love actively shifting at all times on the track whether its stick or paddles, controlling engine speed, correlating with steering inputs and chassis balance... Giving it over to the car computer in a (gulp) "automatic" mode is giving up a huge amount of car control. And fun.

When I graphed the thrust curves on a stock M3 (M-DCT), it was advantageous to shift at redline in pretty much every gear.

Should you wait for the DCT shift lights to go to RED or red + flash? Does it even flash? I can't remember on top my head right now.

Red + flash is basically just before maximum engine speed. As soon as you see it flash, grab the paddle.

I've checked my go pro recording, and I only see the red LED light up and not flash, but I did shift at 8000, rather than 8300rpm, so would it flash then if I hit that rpm?

I was just at the track today and I can confirm that right as you pass 8,000, it will flash. That's just enough time to fire off a shift before you hit the rev limiter.

Thank you so much for that. I always shifted at 8000 when it goes red, so I wasn't sure if I should go any further with the revs.

You want it trust me

I have a loud exhaust and still find it useful. They blink at a predetermined setting which makes it very, very consistent

6MT needs shift lights. I do it mostly by sound but when there are full blown race cars next to you you end up bouncing because you can't hear shit from your own car haha.

Anyone know how to use arduino?
