E9X M3 remote reservoir: how did you route and mount them?

Tell me everything

Mine are in the front windshield drains held in place with open cell fuel cell foam to let water through. Lines routed up the shock towers along the hood seal.

Rears routed through the trunk vent panels with a notch in the upper corner of the vent, and mounted to the trunk carpet behind the wheel well with large zip ties

You can remove the cabin filters from underneath the hood and cut the top lids open to have access. Much better solution.

Kaiv, you're not supposed to be lurking in the E92 section!! You're going to end up with a third one!!!

Thanks!

I have yet to do this on an E9x which is why I ask. Rear sounds exactly like the E46 which I'm familiar with (rear trunk vents).

For the fronts, I'm assuming there is a small opening where the hardlines for the brakes go through?

Yes run the canister lines up behind the airbox along the hardline/harness penetration/bump out in the wheel liner. Really easy almost like it was designed for it. Watch out you don't squish the ground on the passenger side against the body. Bad grounds are no fun.

My canisters have been mounted the way they are for more than 45000 miles and 3.5 years. when I hear about a better solution that doesn't require cutting anything and keeps the canisters out of the engine bay while still allowing easy access to the adjuster, I will take a look. But it's not as if I didn't look before I chose to do what I did.

No you didn't! That's hilarious

I see you're looking at a remote reservoir setup now? Will you install the rears 'as is' or tie them into a cage?

Many great options noted in this thread!

Rears are very simple, similar to the E46s.
Fronts, another option would be to follow the hard brake line through the fender liner. Just need to pull the liner back a tad, fit the line/quick disconnect, then it should end up right in the middle of the engine bay. This should give you some decent slack to mount the canister more towards the front or rear of the engine bay.

Best of luck with the install. We're glad you scooped up a set for your E92 M3.

Clean install!

I'd never be able to cut the plastic that cleanly.

My thoughts exactly. I wouldn't mind cutting into those covers but there's no way I'd be able to do it this cleanly.

I think I'll follow Richbot's and tlp's advice

Idk what I'm doing wrong but the piece of bracket sticking out down there and hinge assembly on the hood do not allow me to place the can there at all :scratches head:

You have to route the line to let the can rest under there and slide the can in next to it. Also why is it wrapped in tape do you also wrap the front of the car before you leave the house

I will run downstairs and take a photo and try and post it up

Photos aren't posting but you need to pull up the rubber cowl seal thjngie and get everything down lower so the hinge doesn't come into play really at all. Notice in the photo tlp posted above the canister is resting about an inch below where the hinge mounts to the body

If I had to guess you have a 2012+ M3. They re-engineered the hood brackets to conform to new pedestrian crash standards. It can fit but may have to remove the hinge and grind out any tabs or obstructions to get the reservoir to snuggle up.

Ahhh well that explains it. And I did have the whole cowl off, routed the hose underneath etc there was just no way the reservoirs would fit in those drain pockets without taking out the angle grinder... Which I'm not willing to do.

Temporarily zip tied them to the strut bars until I figure something out.

Thanks guys.

OH snap. Didn't know that change happened.

Sell the car and get an '08 and spend the difference on tires?

By the way the tape was just to prevent scratching the thing while I fiddled with it and fix it in place but yes the front of my car is wrapped in clear bra
