True - but I thought the E36 M3 had twin exhaust pipes.

Yes they did, all 4s had a single tip whilst all 6s had twin tips.

You should have claimed the M3 badge back off it and left a note.

The latter E36 323i (97 onwards) had a single tip despite being a 2.5l I6.
