Since we're all waiting for more BMW info on the 1er (and since BMW also builds bikes), I thought I'd share something that a friend passed along a bit back. The website contains a series of pages on the reconstruction of an important motorcycle from the age of board track racing.

The following YouTube vid has a gentleman explaining the Excelsior Motorcycle and Board Tracks. But he's a bit off on his recollection of Board Track dates - they were in operation in various parts of the US from 1910 to 1931. But his story about an encounter with an old board track racer is worth it. The board tracks were the true antecedents of today's 'Superspeedways'. Dick Wallen's book, "BoardTrack: Guts, Gold & Glory" is an excellent reference.

The list of drivers to win at that track is a Who's Who of pre WW II racers. Roscoe Sarles was killed at the Kansas City board track in 1922. Murphy, Milton and DePalma were all top tier drivers.

Gary Doyle wrote a great book about Jimmy Murphey, "King of the Boards", DePalma was the uncle of Pete DePalo who wrote, 'Wallsmacker". Tommy Milton was famous for his Indy wins.
