Very true and thought the reverse thing would be standard since the mirrors are electric anyway and nothing more to add except for some codes.

Definitely dimming interior mirror, saw it happening, turns dark green and sensor in mirror. But exterior didn't play ball.

To check, simply go to bmwvin.com and enter the last part of your VIN number and you should see a full list of options that has been installed on your car.

Interior mirror - auto dim, confirmed by sensor, looking green when dimmed.
Exterior mirror, electric folding in, heated, and mirrors move (of course).
But doesn't dim when inside is dimmed and doesn't angle downwards in reverse.

+1, my M3 passenger side mirror also angles down when selecting reverse. If you've ensured the selector switch is to the left and it still isn't working, take it back to the dealer.

Double checked today, having the switch on the right (drivers side) will enable the mirror to angle down when in reverse, just like my previous car. Don't know why it didn't work yesterday. Or maybe its just me.

Still don't think it will dim though. Does yours guys? dar2008 / hugehead?

So we won't be blinded by the lights behind us?

Just strange that the standard E92 had it, wonder why they didn't bother with the M mirrors. At least parking thing is working, much prefer that if I had to choose one.

Never checked for the dimming thing when in reverse, it does clearly dim in certain 'light' conditions though!

You mean dipping down right and dimming when its bright?

Mine clearly doesn't dim when it's bright. Which part number have you got? Can you run it through bmwvin and check which mirror option you have or the part number for it?

I drove 470 miles the other day and pretty damn sure it wasn't dimming.

Im probably confusing things.. no dimming and dipping at the same time (but you've sorted out your dipping thing). Mirrors dimming in night conditions yes!

Easiest way to check, wait until its dark enough to have your lights on whistles driving. Then go out to your ca, start it up, make sure the headlights are on, then turn on your interior light, the one right in forint of the rear view mirror.

This will activate the dimming - any mirror that should dim will dim at this point.

Easy way to heck

It definitely doesn't dim, the exterior. Unless its' broken but I can't find the part on realoem that says it can dim. Unless the newer M3s do?

"Outside mirror heated with memory" is the only one that's listed, nothing about dimming.

Still hunting around and I think I finally found out the parts for them and confirmation that some do dim.

It appears that these do not dim:

51168046499 (left)
51168046500 (right)

The dimming ones are

51168041951 left fold-in heated memory (dim)
51168041952 right fold-in heated memory (dim)

Very expensive but the question is will it work if mine originally weren't dimming, except for the interior rear view mirror which automatically does?

Found this as an example http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OEM-BMW-M1...item19d7dbf9c1

but says not to use without dimming option.

The auto dip function is common on auto folding mirrors but maybe an option.
As for the outside dimming you need to have electrochromatic mirrors fitted as an option from factory these are hard wired to you interior mirror to work.
But on a negative note if you break a glass it's £230 per side.

Previous M3 had electric folding mirror, dipping when reverse function, but didn't have the dimming feature.

Current M3 has everything above but has dimming feature which is very useful and I like it a lot!
