911 GT3 Brake Ducts on E92 M3

ECS were selling these 911 GT3 brake ducts for $7.50 /pair. Thought I'd see if I could retrofit them on my E92 M3.

https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...99734148392kt/

This is what the part looks like:

Had to do some cutting as the original piece was too long and slightly too tall. Had to trim at both ends, as well as make cutouts so the duct wouldn't foul against the lower arm knuckle and sway bar link. Then tied it all together with some cable tie.

RHS front:

RHS back:

The left side was a little bit more complicated due to the headlight adjuster link on the lower arm. More trimming needed.

LHS front:

LHS back:

I also had to trim off a portion of the brake dust shield to allow the airflow to hit the brake discs.

From under the car, it does look like the ducts will see some airflow. How much of it will actually make it to the rotors and how much cooling they provide, I have no idea.

But for under $10 and some elbow grease, I really can't complain. Surprised no one has done this yet. Will see if it can survive 200+kph and a trackday soon.

I was threatening to do this in the track forum, glad somebody finally did it. Would love to see some before/after pyro readings

Unfortunately my testing will only go as far as to ensure they stay attached to the lower arms. I don't have the equipment nor the prior data to test before and after temp readings. Maybe someone with more experience than me can take that up?

i have thought of constructing these on my own, but i'm glad to see the 911 scoops appear to work. can we get a picture from the front? how well does it point towards the rotors?

Airflow should hit the rotor between the lower arm bolt on the knuckle and the steering tie rod bolt. Gotta cut away the brake dust shield there though. Will try to take a pic soon, but the car is back on the ground.

I always get a kick seeing people DIY trick things like this. I'd imagine it would be relatively easy for someone to 3D print some custom plastic ones for the M3 arms.

Do you have a pyrometer, the brake rotor paint, or the temperature stickers? Before/after data is what we would want to see.

I'm afraid I don't. Plus I don't track near often enough. For a $7 mod, I'm hoping one of the track junkies can do the temp testing.

I'm not sure trimming the shield is strictly necessary to get the benefits of these. Porsche runs a splash shield on some of their (admittedly bigger) 911 front setups, like this 997 GTS:

991S:

As long as you're getting more air somewhere near the annulus of the rotor where the rotor is pulling air so it can suck it out through the internal cooling vanes, you're doing better than nothing

Will try, test, and report back when I get a chance

For 8 bucks, I'm gonna give this a try too. I wonder if taping tufts of yarn to the scoops and mounting a GoPro down there would help show that the airflow is going where you'd hope it would go.

My workshop had a 997 Turbo up on the hoist when i was doing this mod so I managed to get a good look at the Porsche setup. Indeed, the 911 has a complete brake shield even with the brake ducts. However, there is a small cutout on the inner radius of the shield at around the location of where the duct is pointing. I'm assuming this is to allow air to contact the rotor.

I took the decision to cut the shield as it looked like it would be more effective to have direct airflow to the rotor.

Update - Did a couple 200+ kmh runs and the ducts have stayed on.

I did a simple simulation using an air gun blowing onto the duct and there is significant airflow coming out the sides towards the rotor. Imho it does work.

I could be taking crazy pills because it's been like 40,000 miles since my Stoptech kit went in, but IIRC our stock shields are also pretty open around the inner radius of the shield to let air get to the annulus of the friction ring. I'm just leery of letting the lower ball joints and aluminum upright/suspension arms see the radiant heat from a brake, but it's probably fine. You could also probably just cut a little triangle out, or a couple of slots on the inner radius of the shield, and keep most of the shield intact for the other benefits. But for maximum attack what Redd did is probably the best bet

EDIT, yarp, big ol' air gaps, just not open right where the the duct throws the air:

My plan to test is simply to only install one and do a mini brake-bedding procedure and see if there's any difference on the hat, rotor face, caliper and/or wheel temperature left to right, then install the other one and see if the temps even out. I have an IR and a probe pyro. I'll do this without any mods to the heat shield because I'm lazy first

But keep in mind I'm usually all talk and I don't need to be under the car anytime soon, soooo, hopefully somebody else with a pyrometer can beat me to it for science

I'm extremely glad this thread exists. I had no idea these were $8 *per pair* the cheapest I had found was like $25 each, and not as good a fit

how firm are they? the only reservation i'd have would be having the zip ties break or the scoops rotating down or breaking off at high speeds. i know this is what they are for, but if they are loose enough to be compromised... i dunno. do they seem pretty solid when you push on them?

They are flexible plastic. There are enough ribs/reinforcement points that they are fairly stiff but will bend and not break if it hits anything. it's definitely not brittle like fibreglass or CF. I doubt they will damage anything even if it gets stuck between suspension components.
