Post Fluid quantities and types for engine, transmission and differential

I recently decided to purchase access to bmwtechinfo.com for a day so I could check on various procedures.

From my owners manual, its says that the oil in the engine, transmission and differential are changed at the post break in-1200 mile service. It didn't mention the oil filter so I don't know if that is changed or not.

After looking at various procedure and data pages I was able to come up the the capacities and types of lubricants that are required for the 1200 service. It might be wise to confirm that your dealership is using the correct lubricant for each of the three applications. Sometimes shops use only one grear lubricant for all applications. But a specific and different oil is necessary for the transmission and differential.

Main Lubricants for E92/S65 M3
Engine-
w/filter 8.8 liters,9.3 quarts
no filter 8.4 liters,8.9 quarts

BMW High Performance Synthetic Oil Castrol RS SAE 10-60, also called
Castrol TWS Motorsport SAE 10-60
07 51 0 009 420 (liter)

oil filter 11 42 7 837 997

Transmission - 2.1 liters, 2.2 quarts

Castrol MTF-LT-2
83 22 0309 031 (five liters)
83 22 0406 941 (half liter)

Castrol MTF-LT-3
83 22 7533 818 (five liter)

Differential - 1.1 liters, 1.2 quarts

SAF-XJ Synthetic Final Drive oil for Limited Slip Differential
83 22 1 470 080 (55 liter drum)
83 22 1 467 993 (one liter)
83 22 2 282 583 SAF-XJ+ FM booster

Thanks for the info!

I was going to post a thread asking what gets done at the 1200 mile service. Glad I did a to avoid possible flames!
I anticipate my 1200 mile service will be in a month or so...hopefully the oil filters will be in stock by then.

M3 2008 Engine Oil

Is anyone with a new M3 using anything other than Castrol Oil??? I've spoke with several dealers and even called the Toll Free Service Number and everyoe told me that Mobil One 15W 50 would be just fine. I've been a Mobil One user for some 25 years, I'm just not a big Castrol Fan after all of these years with Mobil. Anyone else using Mobil One?????????

Mobil One is a great oil and I have used it in my last car, However I would stick with the oil specially designed for use in our incredibly complex engines. I have also made an inquiry with Mobil customer support and they stated that they would not produce oils in our viscosity rating because of the limited usage. With companies Like Greddy and Elf coming out with BMW specific oils I find this a huge disappointment from one of the largest oil companies in the world.

I haven't put enough miles on the M3 to do an oil change yet, but I definitely plan to use Mobile One 15W-50. I used it exclusively in my E39 M5 (which sorta required the same Castrol TWS) with no problems of any sort (excessive wear, oil burning, etc.)

Castrol TWS is far better than your garden-variety Castrol, as it ought to be for $9/liter. I would stick with this, as it is what you will get at the dealer for your free services, and the factory has extensively tested it. No sense to differ for in-between oil changes (to save $30?).

The E39 M5 crowd has flogged the engine oil issue to death - the BMW TIS allows both 5w-30 and 10w-60 (!) and those who've tried both didn't find much of a difference in driving experience or in UOA.

TWS is what BMW Motorsport (not "M" but the actual racing division) specs for most of their engines, except for the Formula 1 V8. It's installed and sealed inside Formula BMW engines, it's spec'd for the E46 M3 GTR V8 and it's in pretty much everything else they sell so race cars can race. It's on par with the best racing oils in the world. That it's as cheap as it is is surprising.

I went through the gamut of different (allowed) oils on my E39 M5 - nothing did better than TWS although I did find a few that performed just as well. So why mess with oil selection? There's nothing better and it's free if you follow the maintenance schedule!

Evening All,

I actually work for Castrol and got an M3 via the company car scheme. I asked our technical people (who work with BMW on development) about the running in period and the oil used. They suggested nursing the car during the running in period and following the manual for lubricants.

Then they got mad and went on to "..do you think we do this stuff for the good of our health..."

So, I'm no salesman and I'm not doubting there are other quality oils out there but I doubt you will get a better lubricant than the one its been designed with.

BMW uses different numbers for the same products depending on the size of the container. You may have an oil in 1 L, 5 L & drum sizes with three different numbers. It's confusing. Would be nice if they had a consistent number with maybe one digit different for size.
