Dct vs 6mt m3

I am looking at a dct and currently have a manual. Are the issues resolved on the dct. The one I am looking at is a 09 and has the latest software update.

Get a 6MT.

Unless you're one of those guys that prefers to give his partner an orgasm through a vibrator, you'll appreciate the extra involvement.

DCT issues were solved last spring I believe. Most everyone got the fix with the software. Don't make your decision based on issues you have read, they have been a minority of owners. You need to decide if you want a DCT or a manual and if you don't know, then try something different, in this case a DCT. You know what the 6MT is like, try the DCT and see if you become a convert.

As a point of reference, in the last year I have read several posts from members who went from DCT to 6MT and generally regretted it. I even think a member had a 6MT for like 2 months and traded back to a DCT. I think BMW spent a considerable amount of time setting the car around the DCT given that the GTS is in DCT only.

Personally I love it to the point of never wanting to drive another torque converter automatic ever again.

I agree the manual may be more involved from a driver perspective but the dct shifts so quick. I am getting older I guess because I would have not even considered this option before.

One thing about DCTs are that you will have a constant surge of power even throughout the shifts without any interruptions compared to the 6MT. Even though you can do that with the 6MT, most people aren't fast enough to shift and even if they are...its not like the DCT shifts.

The DCT is brilliant. I have an '09 with the latest software. Perfectly rev-matched downshifts are completely awesome. Functional AND gratuitous downshifts with throttle blip FTW!

Test Drive it. DCT is much more aggressive, faster and at the same time a lot easier to deal with on a day to day basis.

It has the best of both worlds, ability to select a gear manually, ability to select a gear automatically, you also have the ability to blip the throttle on down-shifts manually or automatically, DCT you also gain an extra clutch to keep things moving mid-shift.

The 'raw' feeling you will miss is the old school left foot, engaging of the clutch, for many this is an old school must have, it's almost counter-intuitive for them to drive an 'automatic' sports car, which I assure the DCT is far from.

For the level of driver that you are *otherwise this wouldn't be a question, and the places that you will go, you are most likely dealing less with performance and more with feeling, you'll need to decide which feels better and which package is more enjoyable to drive for you.

For some it is rowing through the gears, for others it's downshifting the DCT just to hear the revs pop.

. I love the DCT, every single car before this one was manual. It truly is amazing and I think makes the car more fun to drive... not to mention faster while at the same time you can go into total relax mode if need be.

I wouldn't mind trying a DCT at some point, although i worry about getting bored over time. My main concern, however, is that my girlfriend will assume it's ok to drive the M, because "it's automatic"! Not happening! lol

I got bored of a non-manual after 16,000kms. Pressing a button to me is like playing a computer game.

Rev matched downshifts are nice, but you can do that anytime in a MT.

I don't think "one is better than the other." 6MT vs DCT is just different options of achieving the same result: changing gears. If you haven't driven the DCT, check it out to see if you like it (you know what a 6MT is like). It comes down to what you like more and what is going to make more sense for you; there is no "right" answer that anyone on the forum could give you. good luck though (it definitely is a hard decision for some)

I wasn't looking for a perfect answer. I was just curious if anyone has gone from one to the other and what their experience was. When I watch videos on you tube I am just amazed at how quick the dct shifts. I almost wish it wasn't able to be a automatic at all and you had to shift manually all of the time. That way you couldn't get lazy and put in drive an go.

and that was my issue - always got lazy and reverted to full auto.

I owned a 6MT M3 and went to a DCT M3.

Loved the 6MT.

Love the DCT.

My DCT has never once been in D mode. I treat the car as though it is a clutch pedal manual. It is a lot of fun and, to me, more fun than the 6MT because... (1) the car is noticeably faster without any delay on acceleration, (2) I can drive the car faster into corners and the car will always heel-toe perfectly for me, (3) the gearing of the DCT makes the car feel like it has more torque to me, (4) the rev matched downshifts are awesome and I never get tired of them, (5) the car feels and acts like a 6MT minus the clutch pedal.

The 6MT was more "involving" and when I heel toed on my own, it was fun. This is the first non 6MT I have owned in 23 years of driving and I will now always own a DCT or equivalent. It isn't because I'm lazy or getting old, it's because I find the car is more fun with this transmission (my opinion only), faster, easier to drive hard and fast (i.e. I focus on driving the car and I know the car will get the shift perfectly when, and only when, I tell it to) and I don't need a false ego boost from a clutch pedal because I was already a fairly good 6MT driver and don't need to prove that to myself or anyone else any longer.

I miss my 6MT 5% of the time and really love and appreciate the DCT the other 95%.

The only downside is that I find I am much harder on the car at the track (brakes and tires) because I carry more speed into corners because I can brake and shift later in the straights. Another DCT driver that spends time at the local track has the same issue. In my opinion, the only people that can drive a 6MT as hard and deep into a corner and then nail a heel toe downshift to get through the corner as well as a DCT car can on a consistent basis are semi pro drivers/instructors. The rest of us, even good 6MT drivers, are a distant second.

Having said all of that... I still love and respect the 6MT and for many it is the better transmission for a variety of other reasons.
