surging during acceleration

Dear members I own a 2011 BMW M3 . I have noticed that when I start accelerating from a stand still ( a traffic light for example) I press the acceleration 1/3 and it launches accelerating normal at first and then it start surging , like if the fuel cuts off . It is brutal , it happens on the auto mode ( I have a double clutch) Have not tried wit the paddle shifter . Also happens before 2nd gear comes up . Have any of you experienced this? I have an app. with the dealer on Aug 2 . I figure I ask first since the dealers are notorious for saying that everything is OK ( LOL)

Yep. Happens with me too. Cold motor, and I get that surging on occasion when trying to drive slowly. I've learned to keep it in 1st gear a bit longer and be very gentle letting the clutch out as I shift to 2nd. The M3 is a tricky car to drive slowly on a cold motor. It justs wants to rev, and if you need to drive it slowly, like when exiting your neighborhood, you can get the surging from time to time. Keeping it in 1st definitely helps, however.

I get it too. Not usually when cold, but often when I have the "power" button on.

I experience the same problem from here to there, it's embarrassing when somebody else is in the vehicle LOL I have heard of certain ECU tunes being able to fix this, that is all I know but am curious if anybody does have further information.

6mt - I only get it with power button and if I hit the gas hard, but not too hard as to be going full throttle.

Let the motor warm up before taking off. If your driving in D mode, you may want to set your DCT setting at D1 to avoid going into first gear.

I've tried today on D , car warm , stand still , gently squeezing the accelerator 1/3 , it took off nice and then the engine cutt off and the picked up again , before reaching 2 nd gear . Reminded me of a crazy horse , LOL . I could not reproduce whe using the paddles. Maybe a fuel pump situation

I'm 99.999% sure what you describe is what is asked 2-3 times per week on this forum. The surging is normal until you get a bit used to the throttle response. Even then you may still experience it, but you'll have to decide whether to slow down or punch it to get through the surge.

I believe you are correct . It is amazing , and I realize that I could get use to the sensitivity of the throttle response issue .
Thank you ThunderMoose

I believe if you Drive in D1, the car will only downshift to 2nd gear, which makes it less likely to lurch when you take off. You can do the same in S mode as well - i.e. shift to 2nd before taking off.

Prior to getting Dinan flash I felt throttle had small dead zone at start of travel and then kicked in rapidly causing this issue- Dinan flash makes it linear from first millimeter of travel and solves the problem!

I checked the Dinan flash at the Dinan website and can find it . There seems to be 2 chips . would you mind giving me the " official name" ?
Thank you

dinan

You want the $799 Engine Performance Software. Other one is for cars with X-pipe. Should mention there can be some minor surge due to cold DCT clutch chatter but only as you pull away from a stop. this is separate from software. Something that helped me learn to modulate throttle smoothly was to drive it in Super Sport mode for a few days- then regular sport mode was easy (re-flashed my brain!).

I have a 6MT, I used to notice the surge when engine is cold and on 1st gear, occasionally 2nd gear...just ease off gas or let the engine warm up some.

OK , I took the car to the dealer and we were able to reproduce the surge -cut off- lurching issue . Basically it happens with the power button on , and ThunderMosse and the rest of you guys were correct . I have not been " fully loading " the throttle appropiately . It is very sensitive when the Power switch is on . I learned now how to do it and it is a BLAST .
I am grateful to the members of this forum for the advise

Isn't this the classic "bucking bronco" that happened with the E46? That car had a power button that was way too sensitive. It was worthless. The drive by wire throttle when on power and the car is cold is so sensitive that as you accelerate, your foot moves slightly back and lets off the gas. Damn thing is so sensititive, it is really hard to modulate. Just leave the power switch off when the car is cold.

I very much remember experiencing it with SMG and reading about it on forums back in my E46 days...I've experienced the surge once in the two weeks I've owned my E92 W/DCT. I will say I've been able to avoid it (so far) by adapting my throttle tip-in.
